Hi guys - my female guinea pig DeeDee is 3 years old and recently lost her cage mate, another 6 six year old female piggie. Deedee usually eats a lot of hay and poops a lot throughout the day, but recently i noticed she only eats when I'm at home with her. when i leave for work and go back home i only see 2-3 poops which is alarming, but she eats a lot once i am back home and produces a lot of poop. same issue when i wake up and notice no poop but she starts eating once I'm in the living room with her. for weekends, when i stay home she eats non stop and has a lot of poop.

deedee is still very energetic and doing zoomies occasionally, her weight hasnt gone down.

her poops after the no poop period are usually a bit smaller and has pointed tips, then after she eats her poop are normal sized, about half has pointed tips. i guess thats probably due to long period of not eating and her body is flushing out old poop? her poop as attached image, from top to bottom = since i got home and her eating food again

deedee and her cagemate had too many veggies once in late april, and both got bloating, but deedee has recovered by herself really soon after i limited her to only timothy hay and water.

i give deedee timothy hay and water now, benebac once a day, and did baby gas drop for the last two days since it worries me with her prolonged period of not eating.

really appreciate any advice!

Poop output is 1-2 days behind food intake so lack of poop on one day is actually lack of food from the previous day. if she is going for periods without eating then there will be a stall in poop production while she isn’t eating. She will then eat again in the evening when you’re home but those poops comes out the following day.

It’s good her weight is stable though.

It may be that she is struggling being alone. Are you able to get her a new friend?

got it, thank you so much! yes i figured shes not bloating, more like missing her friend. she has produced more n more poop the last two days.

i am looking to adopt a guinea pig close to her age maybe a bit later, still dealing with the loss of my older piggie :(
