Guinea Pig Passed Away After Op

On Thursday I took my wee guinea pig Henry to the vet as I noticed he had lost weight and was lethargic. After examination I was told his teeth were pointing an cutting his tongue and cheek whenever he ate and that he could get an anaesthetic for them to file his teeth down or the only other option was euthanasia. We obviously opted for the op for him. He stayed overnight at the vet and had the op on Friday afternoon and I collected him this morning. The vets gave me some vitamin powder to put in water and feed manually which I was doing but he still wasn't eating great. I brought him out and lay him on my lap to try to feed him a little by hand but he wasn't interested. Anyway, I thought he had fell asleep but he didn't wake up. We have just had a little burial in the garden to say our goodbyes. I worry now how our other pig Hooper will be without his best pal x

I think Hooper will need to have a new friend, not too soon though. You'll have to observe how Hooper is, then decide when the time is appropriate.

Thanks. My husband and I were speaking about whether to get a new friend for Hooper but then I'm also wary about introducing a new pig as I've heard that it can be difficult to put a new one in with them. Would like to get him a playmate though as he's lost without his wee pal.
 
I am ever so sorry for your loss; it must be very upsetting for you! Many vets are not practised with dental operations or are aware that dental piggies need painkiller and hand feeding for quite some time as aftercare. Henry also may have had an underlying issue; his lethargy could have been well due to heart problems, which are another area that general vets are usually not too aware of. :(

Hi When the time is right, have a look at our rescue locator on the main menu, the best solution for your remaining piggie is take him boar dating at a reputable rescue.

Thanks! There is sadly no rescue really close to you (Scotland is unfortunately not a good place for good standard rescues). This is your closest rescue that has boar bonding experience, so it may worth seeing whether you can get to them. They are not on our rescue locator, but I have rehomed from them in the past. The only other rescue with boar dating experience and of good standard is in Alyth in Perthshire.

Thanks for that. Think it's a bit far away though unfortunately. Hopefully we can sort something else out. Really appreciate your help though xx
