Junior Guinea Pig
There has been alot of controversy recently about whether guinea pig pellets are healthy for guinea pigs. Hopefully this post will help you decide. Personally I do feed my guinea pigs pellets and in my opinion they are healthy. These are the reasons why;
Guinea pigs can sometimes be very selective at eating, meaning they will only eat the foods that they like. Sometimes these foods that they don't eat are providing them with their needed vitamins. Pellets which have tasty things in them which guinea pigs love also make sure that your guinea pigs get the vitamins too.
Some veggies are expensive. Alot of vegetables with high nutritional values are expensive and while you may be able to afford to give them every other day, you may not everyday. This is when pellets come in handy. When you are not sure your pigs are getting enough vitamins, the pellets will make sure they do.
Sometimes we run out of a certain vegetable. Maybe when you were cooking that stirfry last night, you forgot that the guinea pigs needed that bell pepper for their breakfast and in the morning you are worried that they won't have enough vitamin C. Sometimes the grocery stores run out of peppers or cucumber. Pellets are a great backup.
Pellets add variety to guinea pigs diets. Variety is the spice of life that's what we're all told. Your piggies will get bored of the same old breakfast and dinner every day. Imagine never having dessert again.
These are some reasons why you should feed pellets and when they will come in handy. Just remember you cannot just cut out all nutritional vegetables and think the pellets will fix it. Pellets are good vitamin boosters not sole diets. It's like taking a multi vitamin and saying I'll never have to eat a vegetable again. It doesn't work like that. Also remember greenery is also very important and pellets can't replace vegetables. A bucket load of hay keeps the vet away!
