Our guinea pig Mały (means small in polish) has pneumonia and our vet prescribed baytril injections for a week and she's had 2 so far but we think that that's too many. She's taking 0.17cc I believe and supposedly after 2 days of injections we should see improvement but there's really no improvement. I'm supposed to go to a different vet than our usual for him to do the injections since our regular vet is too far away since my mom's at work and I'm the only one home (I'm only 16). Is a 3rd baytril injection safe? She's still pooing and peeing (poo's are small and squeezed) that's a good sign but she shows no interest in eating and we syringe feed her pellet mash, very little gatorade dilluted in water for electrolytes and energy, some natural carrot baby food and several different blended things but we can't go on like this forever I mean she's had pneumonia for about a week now and she's still going but why is there no improvement?

Oh yeah and I forgot to mention she's 1 and a half years old

Whereabouts do you live?

Baytril can put them off their food, maybe it's time to try another antibiotic, perhaps Septrin? I'm not sure it's suitable for URIs though, hopefully someone more familiar with antibiotics will be along soon & will let you know.

If she has fluid on her lungs then a diuretic like Frusemide will be helpful. Is your vet very experienced in treating URIs in piggies do you know? I hope she gets better soon :)

I'm in Vancouver British Columbia. The vet far away has saved my guinea pigs many times he's experienced with small animals. 3rd day of Baytril doesn't seem to be an improvement but she's still pooing and peeing. Today there was diarrhea but I believe that's a side effect of Baytril. He said he will switch antibiotics if Baytril doesn't work and my mom just bought Marshall ProBiotic + Digestive Tract Conditioner with Lactobacillus Acidophillus. 100% safe for ferrets and other small animals. Is this safe? We haven't given it to her yet to make sure. We're also ordering Critical Care which I've never seen anywhere in stores here in Canada but the vets can order it for us. Her environment is warm and always clean (we clean very often!). Her cage is huge it takes up literally 1/4 of our living room and we're taking really good care of her. We also have vitamin C tablets approved for small animals including guinea pigs in the list which we crush up and mix it with water or pellets sometimes. We've also tried "poop soup" from our healthy 5 year old guinea pig.

Whee have a few members on here from Canada now....... i am sure Janna has her piggie Batman on another antibiotic..... i'll go see if i can find her thread.
I agree antibiotics muck up there system, i'm giving my girl probiotics but she's still got loose poops.
Keep up the great work, perhaps cut down a little on the fresh veggies and offer more hay and pellets? Just a thought to help with the poops.

Yup she took chlor palm when the bacteria was in her mouth (the bacteria she has is staphylococcus) this also cleared her nose which was all dirty for 2 weeks (she sneezed and some green stuff came out) but we stopped because it's in her lungs now. The vet said one of her lungs is filled I think. Is there any antibiotic that "sucks" it out? I think we have to switch to septrin because so far it doesn't seem baytril is doing any better than harm.

I know Septrin is another one that is recommended.... other than that if your vet can get Zithromax it's being used in the UK more now :)

Poor little thing she's gone from one thing to another! :...

She's been looking sleepier after the 3rd injection idk if she's going to make it she just looks so tired and lifeless :S

Mala just died in her fleece bed, after that 3rd shot she looked so tired, she died relaxed sleeping so innocent with her cute little eyes open, we spent this whole day petting her and kissing her poor thing just couldn't last any longer I hate how guinea pigs only have one chance at life and they connect so much with you it's like losing a part of you that you can never get back. There's no other guinea pig that will be like her since every guinea is unique and silly in their own way. R.I.P my innocent little angel.

It's so quiet and lonely without her :( Pets are just the biggest heartbreakers.
