Hey guys,

So when i first got my piggies i feed them on supreme selective science pellets, about a year into owning them i changed them over to asda's own as it was cheaper. I have now changed them back to supreme selective science as i think it is a better pellet.

I have gradually been added it into there asda one and finally made the complete switch on tuesday.
Since then my pigs have rarely been eating there pellets. The boys haven't really been drinking as much water either.

My self white boar beano seems to have some sort of upset, havent seen him drinking and his poos have changed from a dark brown poo to a streaky yellowy brown poo that seems softer. There also seems to be some white stains on their fleece, not sure what these are either.
All my piggies are feed exact same diet. 25g pellets, tons of hay and veggies.

Could you please advise me on what the best thing to do for him is?
I have attached pictures of what his normal poos would look like ( its actually his brothers poo) and then what his poos look like now.

Science Selective is unfortunately still based on alfalfa as the main ingredient; hence the white calcium pee - it means that excess calcium is being excreted.

I would think that the difference in poops would be based on the difference in food going in (different brand of pellets, eating fewer pellets in general.) It can be very hard to switch pellets on guinea pigs, they can be stubborn about these things! I've ended up throwing out bags of food that I bought when the usual brand was not in stock because my pigs refused to eat it at all!

I'm not familiar with the pellets in question, since I'm in Canada and our brands can vary here. White marks on fleece can generally indicate calcium being excreted in urine, so if this is new, I would wonder if the new brand has a higher calcium content than the old brand.

Thank you for your replies. I understand that they food they are now on may have a higher calcium content and this may be the problem with his poops as well. The thing i dont understand is all of my other piggies are on exactly the same diet. But beano is the only one who seems to be having a problem, he really isnt himself, very withdrawn. Normal his a lively boy but the yesterday and today all he seems to want to do is sleep. Ive tried giving he cucumber to ensure he is getting some liquids as he doesnt seem to be drinking. Yesterday he was happily eating hay today he doesnt seem interested. I'm not sure whether to take him to the vets or just to leave him another day or so to monitor and see if he improves.

Please see a vet tomorrow. His symptoms have nothing to do with the change in pellets; that is just coincidental. Poo output is always lagging 1-2 days behind the intake.

Hey guys just an update for you. I took beano to the vets. They took and X-ray and nothing showed up. The vet said he thinks it might be a UTI, but he can feel something abnormal in Beano's gut. They have given him antibiotics and painkillers and we are to go back on saturday if there is no improvement. His home and drinking so thats a plus.

Hope he gets better and good luck with the pellets

Fingers firmly crossed! Glad that Beano is feeling well in himself!

Unfortunately, beano wasnt responding to the antibiotics as we'd hoped, took him back to the vets tonight. They said that the mass in his stomach could be a tumour and they would need to operate but the vet didnt think he'd make it through the operation, so unfortunately the best thing for him was to put him to sleep.

He was a fighter, it took them 3 injections before he'd let go, but I'm glad his no longer suffering and in a better place. x

BIG HUGS!

It is always so gutting when you get bad news like that and have to make the decision that we all hate.
You did the right thing, but it is not making it any easier for you at the moment while your heart is still hurting so badly.

Ahhh sad news but he’s not suffering or in pain anymore. RIP lovely Beano & popcorn free over rainbow bridge. :luv:
Huge hugs to you x
