Hi everyone ,

My guinea pig wife has been scratching heaps so i stopped buying the hay and changed to a difference one , she still has been scratching and now everytime i look at her she seems to be missing more and more hair on her back as well as having a cut on her neck and back it saddens me to see her like this and the mite spray i have doesent work i do not know what to do and i worry for my guinea pigs well being Please help!

It sounds like it could be mites, she needs a vet visit I'm afraid. Shop bought mite spray is rubbish and isn't strong enough. It could be fungal but only a good vet could say.

I hope your baby gets better soon!

I think you need to get her seen by a vet for a formal diagnosis and the correct treatment. Over the counter remedies we often not strong enough to tackle the problem.

It seems like its getting worse it really saddens me to see her like this poor baby, ill book in for a vet today, what are the sign for fungal? Thanks so much for the feedback and support

To be honest it's fairly hard to differentiate between the two with description without seeing it. Are any other piggies showing symptoms? Hope all goes well at the vets!

Yes my other pig scratches but not as much as wife does, thank you hope all goes well :luv:

Update : on wife

Hey everybody thought update you all on my piggy's condition, I booked in a appointment for her go see my local vet they went over everything checking her skin I brought along another pig to keep her company as she was scared, they took a skin sample and couldn't find any mites or what is causing it so they suggested some syringe medicine that I needed to give her for three days with food and she needed to also be separate for three days, the medicine was suppose to help but after a week she started showing the same signs and scratching again I honestly don't know what I'm going to do I thought the treatment would work but it doesn't seem like it did anything now I'm really worried on what I should do next.

Is your vet qualified with exotic animals. I'm not a vet but I would go back. Your piggy must be going mad keep scratching. What was the point separating the two if they have the same symptoms, abet one not as the other. If this is the vet only around, try & get more information about your piggies skin problems.
Good luck
Hi & Welcome to our friendly forum.

You need to see a better vet. Please ring around ones you can travel to to see if anyone has experience with guinea pigs. What part of Oz are you in, will ask for recommendations
This is info on mites Guinea Lynx :: Mange Mites You can't see mites they are not visible and treatment would be with something like Xeno 450 drops. Fungal presents a little differently and is treated with anti fungal medication.

The vet is local and it's not far which is why I go there as I don't drive, I'm not sure if there qualifed I would think they would be as they see all sorts of animals, I live in camden area if you find any that would be much appreciated thank you

I would recommend ringing round and seeing if any pigs in your area are cavy savy

Thanks so much I'll give them a go, it really saddens me because I feel like that place I went to didn't know anything and the medicine did nothing for her I want her to get better she's not the same
