So my guinea pigs is 3 years old, his name is Bo. Over the last few months he has been loosing weight and I just noticed he has been having loose stool. While he poops he grunts and squeaks a little bit and is straining. I’ve felt his abdomen and it seems tender and a little painful. His stomach gurgles most of the time. He drinks water like crazy and seems to be eating normally. He also is just acting his normal self. I would take him to the vet but I’m broke right now so any suggestions would be very helpful

Is there anyone that could lend you some money for the vets or maybe ask about a payment plan? Your piggie really does need to see a vet.

He really needs to see a vet. You could take him to your nearest PDSA if you can not afford to see a regular vet. Any vet is better than none.

@August Our first response will always be that a sick pig needs to go to the vet. Only they can provide any medications that would help. If you can't afford it could you possibly use a credit card or try a PDSA?

How much weight has Bo lost? You need to weigh him daily, at the same time whilst he is losing weight so you can keep an accurate record of how much he is eating?

How long has he had loose stool? Is it almost liquid like or just a bit mis-shapen?

What is he fed? And has he had anything different lately?

A painful gurgling stomach could be a sign of digestive upset, or possibly even bloat. Gut motility medicine will be needed.

@Jaycey i have never weighed him myself because I don’t have the right scale. But when I first got him he was pretty fat. Then a few months ago I noticed he was losing a little weight and I thought that was good because I was letting him run around more in a pig proof area. But now I can feel his ribs slightly and his hip bones. He eats “ gourmet recipe” which has pellets other dried up something idk exactly what it is and Timothy hay all the time he has always been on that and he hasn’t had anything different. I noticed the loose stool a couple days ago and it is not liquid but it’s just a lot of misshaped stool. And what is PDSA?

PDSA is People’s Dispensory for Sick Animals which helps people on benefits or low wages to treat their animals when they’re sick. Most towns have one. This is in the UK - you don’t have your location on your profile so I’m not sure where you’re from.

Hi PDSA is a vet charity that helps out owners that need free of low costing treatment

you really should get your pig to the vet. if you dont have the money you could maybe borrow some from a friend?.. but really the longer you leave him without a vets attention he will probably be getting worse and worse,so the sooner the better.if my piggies are losing weight i would give them extra food, and their favourites, cucumbers, carrots!

Sorry, but I have to agree; your piggy needs to see a vet ASAP! He may well be in pain; could you borrow the money, use a credit card, a loan, or perhaps speak to your vet about a payment plan?
Good luck!
