Hi! I'm Gem, some of you may already know me from other forums. Any way, I help out at a rescue (although we only take in guinea pigs in emergencies now) and today a man emailed me this:

Hi

We have an unneutered male Guinea whose brother dies just before Christmas, he's 4 years old and although we bring him in at night so he has some sort of company we're a bit worried he's getting lonely; do you know anyone who needs to re-home a spayed female of roughly similar age?

What would u suggest? I have never heard of anyone spaying females before, and the boar sounds a bit old to undergo the risks of being castrated. Should I suggest a baby boar? But then the guy says he wants a piggy of a similar age. I don't know what to say? Help! Love Gem.x

Welcome to the forum! Females can be spayed, but unless it's for a medical reason I wouldn't recommend it. If I were you I would suggest a baby boar and go from there. He may say no, but it won't hurt if you try.

This gentleman is in exactly the situation we were in last September with Sammy. Sam's brother Snug had died and he was lonely. We decided to partner him with another adult boar, and it has worked out really well. They have become very good friends and often sleep snuggled up together.
Take a look at the Barmy 4 Boars website for more info on how to introduce boars.
