My guinea pig, mayhem, has been having some respritory issues since the beginning of his life. He gets something caught in his nose, and then he makes a snorty sound until he coughs/ sneezes it out. This was happening once a week or so, and now it is happening about every day. I looked in his nose, and he seems to have some congestion, but his eyes are crusty or goopy, he's not any more lethargic than usual, he just breathes weird. It doesn't seem like any sort of infection. I'm just not sure what to do. I want to help him when he gets something in there, but I know I should just wait until he coughs it out. Any advice?

Hi!

If he has crusty eyes (yellowish/greenish gunk), he as a well developed URI (a bacterial upper respiratory tract infection) and will need an antibiotic to clear it.

If he has NOT go any crusty or goopy eyes, your vet may want to check his heart and the back of his throat. It sounds like he could have an issue with fluid going up his nose and down the wrong way. If you are lucky, he is just a greedy eater but it also may point to heart problem.

He has slightly crusty eyes, but its not green or yellowish. He does have a tendency to get inside of his hay dispenser box, or completely cover himself with hay. Maybe that's contributing. I called a vet, and they said they wouldn't take him today, but I could do a walk in tomorrow.

All the best!
