sorry havent been on for a while...
We have moved and had a spare room above the garage so ive been turning it into a piggie play room..... ;D
its about 15x15 with 5 cages.....these r on the floor with ramps loads of toy tubes hammocks logs...houses...etc...just cant decide what to use as flooring....it will have to be easily cleaned and comfy...one end has about 6 foot of vet bedding where most of the cages are ...just dont know what to put under toys food etc ...I'm so excited about putting them in...its taken me 4 months to get it ready...
the other thing is...do you think i should put them back in cages at night?even though they are completely safe?how well do they see in the dark..to find their way back to cages etc?
then all i need are some more piggies ...i want 2 more to start with as i only have 4 ..they will get lost in there..
have been lucky to get alot of stuff via freecycle and kent-swap-shop setting this up as spent loads...hubby even put in aircon for them for the summer.....i must be mad...
I'm starting on the outdoor playpen in the spring..:-))
any advise welcome please.

sonya
sorry i meant to put this in general chat....if mods want to move it please do so..:-)

Sounds wonderful.

Perhaps you could get an offcut of vinyl from a carpet shop for the flooring, it's easily cleaned and some of them have a slightly raised surface which helps with grip. I find laminate etc quite slippery.

I think I would put them in their cages at night, just to make doubly sure they are safe, also they will need to rest their little piggie legs with all that room ;D

Would love some piccies if poss

i was thinking about vinyl...didnt know if they could grip...didnt think aqbout the bobbly stuff...i will take pics as soon as they are in...:-)
this is going to sound really silly but i have to ask azs they love being talked too ..they all stand up at the bars when i go to see them sqeaking the heads off.....do you think radio on for a little bit a day would be nice...:-).....or am i being a bit over the top with the comforts...lol

I don't think there is such a thing as being "over the top" with piggie comfort - go for it - I leave my radio on for the animals - it's what they expect ;D ;D ;D

my friends think m totally barmy...good job i have a very understanding hubby..lol.

just been ot and got vinyl flooring with like raised bumps on ....:-)
cant wait to put it down now .
there are 2 piggys in my local garden centre ...was told about them from a lady on kent-swap-shop ...she saw them in there the other day..said they didnt look too happy i want to get them ...should i put them in cage in room to start....put my piggies in cage while new one run about...or just put them in together straight away?

Sounds like a great set up. Lucky piggies. O0

Please please consider rescue first :) There are loads of piggies in need all around the country O0

I assume you are only having sows ?

hi

yes sow`s..:-)
i went to my local rescue as i coulldnt get them on the phone ....the lady opened the door and was rude from the start saying i should have called first..not giving me time to say i tried...the shoved a card in my hand and said she was having dinner and to call and make appt....then shut the door..!
i went to the local pet shop then and got one...the other i had off a friend of family who`s daughter lost interest.....i cant find another local resue ...hence going bacl to garden centre..
what would your advise be on putting them together ...straight in ...my 2 in cage other 2 running round room....or new 2 in cage and my 2 running about?

I love free range areas! Please put some pictures up if you can. I have a guinea room which the boys are in, they have vinyl on top of hardboard and then newspaper on top, then shredded paper. As long as they are perfectly safe, I'd only put them in their cages at night if you want to keep them a bit warmer. Mine are inside so not a problem but they like to go in their 'own' areas, 2 of them like to sleep together in the same hutch.

Definitely try to get rescues if you can, even if you have to wait a bit. Are you able to split the area and put the new ones in one area. That's what I tend to do. They then get used to each other through a wire partition. Then you can swap them by putting the 2 new ones in the other area - this way they get to use and scent all of the area without becoming territorial. Good luck and enjoy it, great fun!

I'm so sorry you had a bad experience with the rescue but please keep looking. We're not all monsters, honest ;)

Whereabouts are you, which county?

There may be other rescues around or people on here who may have piggies available, try the rescue section.

Whatever you decide I wouldn't put them in together straight away, it's always best to keep them seperate just in case of any mites/bugs etc they may pass on to your exisiting piggies. You need to give them a couple of weeks seperately if you can.

Let us know how you get on O0

After quarantine they need to go in together to see how they are together. There may be dominance issues that you have to let them sort out. Bachs Rescue Remedy is good for this. If they are good drinkers then a few drops in the water is effective. I am firm but fair when it comes to rescue. No one fails us, they are just asked to make changes if they wish to adopt our guins, if not then they can go elsewhere :)

JBs idea is good too :)
