In the last few days my Guinea Pig seems to have gotten a little uncomfortable. A couple of days ago I heard him make an uncomfortable sound so I bottle fed him some water (He seems to forget to drink in his hutch at times) and he exercised a little and after that he seemed better -

Today he seemed a lot more sluggish than usual and to me he appears to be uncomfortable, and around every fifteen to twenty minutes he makes this sharp shrieking sound. Earlier on I noticed his anus area seemed a bit squidgy and there was some white stuff inside, he also feels weaker and softer when I hold him - I had taken him to the vet only two weeks back and they said he was in superb health but I cannot figure out what the problem is as last week he was extremely energetic.

He had a similar problem with the same symptoms a few months back but the vet couldn't figure out what it was as his health check up revealed nothing abnormal and he sprung up quickly and we thought nothing of it. Any advice any I will be very grateful,

Thank You.

sorry i don't really have much of an idea, but could it be a urinary tract infection? does he shriek when he pees or just generally shrieking?
could you check for signs of impaction ( his poos being stuck together in a lump & being unable to pass them out... as grim as it sounds it may need coaxing out if he is blocked up).

what sort of thing do you mean with white stuff? (dry, powdery, mucas like, wet).
have you checked his penis for debris (hay, grass, bedding lodged around it) or sperm rods?
(sorry i have only had girls so not too sure how to clean out his boy bits other than carefully!)

by soft do you mean bloated/gassy type stomach or liquid filled & squishy like a hot water bottle?
what kind of diet do you feed? lots of veg/grass could indicate bloat if its come on suddenly,

have a look on the guinea savvy vet locator above & see if you can get him seen by one of these if you're not happy with your usual vet or don't feel they are experienced with guineas .

make sure he is eating, drinking, pooping & peeing ok. if any of these are affected then this can be indicators of different problems. let us know.
also try weighing him weekly when healthy or more often when poorly, a sudden large weight difference can show early indications of problems.

hopefully one of the health gurus will be on shortly that can help you out more, with ideas to discuss with a vet.

healing vibes for piggy xx

Sorry to hear that your piggy is poorly.

To be honest my only advice would be take him to a vet as soon as possible. Especially as he is obviously in pain.

Piggies health can deteriorate very quickly so the sooner you can get him help the better.

Sending healing vibes to him xx

I haven't really got anything to add at the moment as @GPTV has covered everything. He does need to see a vet. I agree it sounds like it could be a UTI especially if it turns out that the squeaking is happening when he is peeing or pooing. Stones would need to be ruled out too though. Preferably by x-ray.

Thanks for the advice you guys. I bathed him today and he still seems a little sluggish and weak, definitely less chirpy and energetic than usual - I would say he kind of seems bloated and squidgy similar to a hot water bottle.

I am watching him right now and he seems to be eating and drinking fine but he hasn't squeaked for food today which is also quite common to, perhaps the vet would be the safest option.

it does sound like he needs to see a vet asap. aswell as shrieking, bloating can be very serious, especially as you've likened it to a hot water bottle sound which is an emergency. if you need a piggy-savvy vet recommendation then please let us know - or there is a vet locator at the top of the page which may be of use. good luck.

Hi Jordan, you local vet should have an out of hours number on there answeing service .
l would phone asap , and take him to the emegacy number they provide !
if not phone one of the numbers in the vet locator at that top of the page .
