Manny has had over a week of Baytril treatment and for a few days I thought it had worked, but now I've just heard him squeaking again, so it looks like we're going back to the vets if he's still squeaking in a couple of days.
1. If the Baytril hasn't worked, what does that mean? That it's more than an infection?
2. I'm assuming he will need an X-ray to check for stones or something. How much do X-rays cost for guinea pigs?
3. Is it OK for me to give him another few days to respond to the treatment (apart from the squeaking he is his usual energetic self) or do I need to go to the vet ASAP?

I'm guessing he has/had a UTI? How long was he on Baytril for?

We're going through this with my girl Linney at present. She was really lethargic and wouldn't eat or drink so we rushed her to the vet- she had occult blood in her urine so a UTI or potential stones was diagnosed. The vet suggested antibiotics and a possible x-ray for stones if she symptoms didn't improve. I just took her for a recheck yesterday and unfortunately she peed in the car on the way over so we couldn't get a urine sample to check for blood. The vet gave her another week of Baytril and a syringe and sterile container to collect a urine sample at home and bring back at the end of the week. The vet said it can take a couple of weeks of antibiotics to clear up a UTI, but if she still has blood in her urine after that point we should x-ray her to check for stones and sludge. I think the cost will differ depending on where you are and the vet in question... I'm in Canada, an x-ray is going to cost me about a hundred and ten dollars if we need to do it.

HTH a bit, and hope you piggie feels better!

Hi Wheeky. Sorry to hear about your Manny.

What was he on Baytril for? And by squeaking, you mean in pain?

Squeaking in pain, yes. When he peed/pooed he'd stay very still and do quiet little squeaks until he was done. Before the Baytril I had noticed bits of blood on the towels, I haven't noticed any for a while but he is still doing the little squeaks occasionally when he pees/poos.

He was on Baytril because the vet said it was probably a UTI as he couldn't feel any lumps/stones and Manny wasn't lethargic or unwell in any other way. He is on the skinny side, I've been weighing him every other day but he hasn't changed over the last few weeks, he's stayed at around 925g.

UTIs can be very persistent and usually need about 3-4 weeks antibiotics to clear them completely. However, if symptoms persist (like in your case), I would strongly advise to have an x-ray re. bladder stones or sludge done.
