hi guys some of you may be aware about my situation, I accidentally fed my boy a full pepper when I was trimming his hair last Friday evening, so a week ago. Without noticing he had eating the pepper stem! Since then he was kinda retching, trying to get something out of his mouth, but he was still eating as normal just seemed to be struggling every time he would put something in his mouth he would move his lips very far apart as if he was struggling to chew it, took him to the vets and they said nothing was in his mouth but his teeth was longer at the back then they should be and that he had something called splinters in his teeth? Anyway he had them cut down back to normal size and he’s been home 3 days, he got the teeth trim on Tuesday, I wouldn’t say he’s struggling as much but he’s still kinda struggling to grind it down at the back.

I know I’m probably being paranoid and it’s very unlikely but could it be this pepper stem that’s caused this? It’s weird that it’s since then. I’m guessing nothings stuck in his throat because he’s only doing this when he has harder pieces of vegetables in his mouth. He’s not doing it with leafy greans or hay and he’s drinking fine. Not struggling to breathe etc.

It’s just strange- do you reckon he’s just getting used to his teeth being shorter and it probably feels a bit weird for him?

Hi, even if he has had his teeth filed back to their normal length they wont be perfect and eating will still be tricky for him. Most pigs require repeated dentals to get their teeth back to normal. Encourage him to eat as much hay and grass as possible as the cellulose it contains will help ware his teeth.

If you contact Debbie at TEAS she may be able to offer advice//www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/forums/the-excellent-adventure-dental-sanctuary.50/

I dont think that pepper was the cause of anything, just having difficulty with that hard stalk brought the issue to your attention

Yeah maybe - thankyou! It’s definitely not putting him off eating, he’s eating lots of hay etc. I shall keep an eye on him, thanks x
