Teenage Guinea Pig
Hi
I have been dabbling in a little bit of animal training on and off over the years but more recently especially with my pigs but have given my pigs their first serious lesson today! they seemed to enjoy it!
Anyway I am going to document my progress of training them and hopefully post some vids on my youtube channel as I go along as well and on my facebook page so please do like/subscribe to both if you want to see how I get on.
I am keeping thing simple starting with the commands "here boy" and "up" to get them to me and standing first. I will then move on from there once these are mastered.
So how did they get on today...
I started with Oblivion as hes the smallest he likes to stand up on his back legs to get my attention anyway so I used this to start teaching him the command "up" and receiving a treat for it. He was hesistant at first but I think he is starting to get the idea hes just lacking confidence.
Arthur at first didn't have a clue but after seeing oblivion getting treats wanted some of the action so very quickly started to pick up the idea. hesistant a bit but i think hes going to pick it up quicker as we go along.
Colossus - he is normally the monkey of the group scatty and scarpers when i enter the room however he has been getting better lately and suprisingly will do anything for food he picked up the "here boy" command very quickly and will stand up whilst holding the bars of the cage but not on his own yet! I am expecting great things from him though he may be a lot easier to train than I thought and this might just be the bond between us that we are missing to cure him of his skittishness
Nemesis - well how can I put this... he's the slow kid of my bunch haha! he knows what he needs to do but hes more skittish about it than expected and so very reluctant to go with it. I finally got a "here boy" from him by the end of the session but I can see he is probably gong to be hard work bless him. I do like a challenge after all.
Anyway would love to also hear from anyone else who has trained their pigs please suggest ideas for future tricks for me to teach them! keep in touch as we go along.
Please ask me any questions you may have - the training techniques i am using are ones I have observed and adpated from proffesional animal trainers who I met a while back as well as the basic obvious ones we all know and love as well
