For the past couple of weeks I've noticed that one of my girls, Amber, hasn't been running out of her hidey for breakfast and dinner. When I look for her she's in her hidey lying down, seemingly asleep, only with her eyes open. Tonight when I shon a torch in her direction (I currently have no power in my room) I saw that her eyes seemed to be flickering slightly back and forth. She stays like this until a sound or quick movement disturbs her, then she comes running out squeaking for veggies like nothing ever happened. The best way I can describe it is as though she's in a mini trance.

This behaviour has completely perplexed me because she's right as rain in every other way. She's eating, drinking and toileting as normal. Her weight is spot on and her bevhaviour is completely normal other than this. She's walking and moving normally, so not a stroke. I'm completely confused and have never seen this behaviour before. Has anyone got any ideas what's going on?

She may be sleeping. A lot of guinea pigs will sleep with their eyes fully or partially open. They usually rouse pretty quickly once startled so you may never really see it, but sometimes you can catch them napping (I caught my older pigs sleeping more than my younger pigs- I think they sleep a bit deeper as they age!)

She's probably sleeping, 3 of my pigs have little cat naps and wake up fairly easy except Bella. She sleeps like the dead, it really panicked me the first few times! She wouldn't come out of her hidey for veggies and when I picked up the hidey she still didn't move... Til I touched her and she wakes up, stretches and yawns then goes for her dinner :))

It's funny because the other pigs will NOT go near that hidey when she's asleep, she's probably like her mummy and will bite anyone who dares to disturb her

That's really reassuring, thank you everyone. It just puzzled me because my two other girls sleep with their eyes closed and wake up at the slightest noise. Amber must just love her sleep, a little bit like me! Haha

I thought my Luna was dead the other day. She's usually quite jumpy, but was lying flat out in the open with a glazed look. I walked past a few times and she didn't flinch. Had to stand there watching carefully to check she was breathing! She got up in her own time and pottered off.

My kids used to poke Sundae all the time in her old age to make sure she was alive- she would always sleep deeply with her eyes partly open and it would freak them out!
