Hi everyone!
Just curious as to what sort of tricks or abilities you all have been able to train your cavies to do.
I would REALLY love for my piggies to be litter trained and come when called. Has anyone accomplished this? Tips much appreciated!
Love,
Laura from USA

Hey... ive been training my dog but havent tried the guineas yet... I would love for them to be litter trained and come when called too... My rabbit comes to me sometimes but when i say wiiiillllllssooooonnnnnnn he runs away lol...

Hope someone can help :)

Bye xx

To be honest i think it's love and bonding rather then training. Nutmeg is always at the bars when i go to feed her and gives me a sniff. The others let her get on with it and stay back. ;D

No ideas on litter training.

Don't think anyone has had any success in litter training. To be honest, I'm not bothered as long as I see poops! :)

Tricks and training? I wouldn't bother also - but that's me :)

If you want a pet to be litter trained and do tricks etc then stick to dogs, cats & bunnies! IMO piggies are for cuddling and just bonding with, isn't reward enough when they actually waddle up to you for a treat whilst having floor time without running off at 100mph!

Thats just my personal opinion anyway.........

ah maybe i should have been more specific...my guinea pigs have "permanent floortime" in that they can run in and out of their petstore cage at will (to keep them cooped up would be so cruel!) so when i say litter trained it would be nice if they would only poop in their cage where there's bedding instead of all over the floor, lol. One of my guys does it but the newr one just goes where he pleases. Also of course they'll come up to me when i approach them (treat in hand or not) but i was wondering if guinea pigs can learn their names?

All my pigs think their name is 'Rustle' anyway - 'Rustle' of a carrier bag ;D

oh! LOL

I guess he learnt himself! ;)

A few of mine respond and know their names :) Others will just come to you anyway, no mater wht you call them!

Yeah I think they do or the tone of your voice at leaset, as I guess none of speak to our piggies in our normal everyday telephone voices do we now girsl?! ;)

hahaha, that's true, i don't exactly address them in a professional manner...i wonder if they ever get tired of my singsongy baby talk :D
i also sing to them and, not to brag or anything, lol, but they LOVE it. They'll poke their heads up from whatever they're doing and come running to the front of the cage. Also when i'm holding them my singing seems to soothe them (lullaby songs especially). Anyone else sing to their piggies...c'mon don't let me feel like the biggest dork here ;D

Back when I had two pigs both used a litter tray very well for peeing and pooping. It was placed in the pee corner under a hay rack and the two pigs used it all the time. Now that there's 4 and two of them go wherever they please, the other two original girls are just doing the same. Blah!

All of my pigs have learned without encouragement to stand on hind legs for food. I think this is because in their open-top cage all of their food comes from above and they want to be the first to get to it!

Oh, and here's a video of Bonnie's party tricks. When she is allowed on our bed she runs up and hides under the covers. When there is food on my lap and she can't reach it she will pull on the paper towel I use to dry it until it falls on the floor...

My Uther does that! Like a little dog, on the hind legs, front paws in the air, gimme fooood! So cute :-)

Mine all stand on their back legs for food too - again I think it is because they have open pens so everything comes from above! Mine also come if you call them - they don't know their individual names as if I call one they all come ;D

Not litter training what so ever though!

Wilson knows his name i think... i say it alot around him and when i call out to him from inside he runs up the stairs ;D

They know their names.

If you say "Riffy" in conversation Riff always looks up he's so smart. :)

Angel-Doctor could do loads of different jumps when I asked him. :)

Daftscotslass, OMG that Bonnie is amazing, very very cute hiding under the bed covers :smitten:
But talk about smart that girl is very clever, fancy working out that the veggies were on the paper towel O0 O0
