Hi All,

I wonder if anyone else has had experience with guinea pig tumours that aren't obvious, for example brain or spinal ones. I've googled so much but can't really see anything about it.

It first started when we thought my dear Peanut had an ear infection as she had a head tilt. Then one night she went downhill very quick and fell on her side and wouldn't get up and would run in circles. I took her to the emergency vet who said to have her put down because she had a brain tumour. I decided to not act too hasty and that night she perked back up and was her normal self again.

I took her to my local vets the next day who said she agreed with the tumour verdict and that she might have had a "seizure" and that she would be okay but may spontaneously have a seizure and pass away.

In the meantime she has been her normal self eating / drinking / playing / pooping etc.

Then yesterday I had to take her to the vets as she has lost mobility in her back legs. She has also started loosing her hair and the smoothness in her coat. The vet says there is now nothing she can do for her and to keep her comfortable as she is still eating / drinking / pooping etc. and spend every moment with her until the end.

Has anyone else had experience with this as she is only 2 years old and everything else I read says about them being older?! and would anyone recommend anything that would make her last days / weeks on earth more pleasant?

Thanks,

This must be very worrying for you, dear Peanut is quite a fighter by the sound of things! Somebody will be along soon to give you advice, I just wanted to say hello and hope things go ok for you.

Thanks AuntyC, she is quite a fighter, that's why I've been reluctant to have her put to sleep as she always seems to fight on! She is still young and I hope that she will still be with us for a little while longer.

I have tagged our most medically experienced members for you. They will hopefully have time to look in sometime this evening.

Thank you Wiebke, I look forward to hearing from them.

It might be worth getting an x-ray of the head. I have a guinea pig here at TEAS who was just losing weight for no apparent reason. X-ray revealed slight middle ear changes in one ear and since starting on Zithromax she has steadily gained weight. Although what is going on with your piggy is very different, I do wonder if this is in some way ear related, as I recently had some very bad vertigo episodes and on one occasion couldn't even stand up, and I was found to have an ear infection, although I had no pain in the ear.

She was previously treated for an ear infection, we believe it is a brain tumour as she is now possibly blind and deaf, so definitely something neurological.
Will look to see on the vet finder a specialist near who can advise if it would be advisable to x Ray her or not because of her condition.
