I just brought home a guinea pig. He's only a couple months old and eats and drinks great. He seems perfectly healthy. Right now he runs away everytime I try to pick him up. I'm assuming this is just because he's still young and is still getting used to me? My main concern though is that he has a few small scabs on the top of his head and when I'm holding him, if I touch his head at all or try petting him he twitches his head. He likes to be pet on his sides but nowhere near his head. Is this normal? Should I be worried about the scabs? I have not seen him scratching and have not seen any bugs on him.

Any help would be great! Thanks!

Hi and welcome to you and your piggie to the forum :)
Heather was he from a pet shop? It maybe that he's picked up a skin problem.... i'd be speaking to whoever you got him from.
He really needs to be checked over by a vet.

Have a read thru this thread i'm going to put a link on for you....also look at the links they've popped on the thread.......

Maybe if you could pop some pigtures on of your little one and the area you're talking about, that will help other experienced members to adivse.

Thanks for your quick reply! I will try to get some pictures up shortly. He's squirmy so it may be hard to get them.

I did get him from a pet store. I brought him in and they said they don't look like bites and recommended giving him plenty of vitamin c. They informed me that one of their little pigs had just had a seizure from lack of vitamin c. I've been giving him fruits and veggies daily with vitamin c.

If its a skin problem is there anything serious I should be worried about? I plan on getting him into a vet either tomorrow or Saturday.

sorry got caught up with work stuff.......

I'm no expert at all, but if he seems ok he should be ok till you see the vets. But if there's any changes i'd be on the phone pronto :)
