Recently got a new guinea pig from Petco, and her age was most likely lied about, claiming she was four months old, she seems to be two months. But, the real concern I have about her is that her squeaks are so odd, they're full of air, and she struggles to make a real one. I heard newborn guinea pigs squeak, so why can't she? The closest sound I can relate her 'airy squeaks' to would be a broken squeaky toy a dog would have that just releases air.

I'm so sorry that is happening to your guinea pig. It’s better to adopt than shop because breeders will have more knowledge of guinea pigs than any pet shop worker. I’m new to taking care of guinea pigs, so I’m not that experienced with their health illnesses. But other far more experienced members in this forum will soon help. All the best!

Sorry to hear about this. Other than her airy squeak, is she eating and drinking properly?

My boys Finn and Bear seem to talk to each other, so I wondered if she has a friend she can talk to?

Please see a vet if you are concerned but on its own it is not likely to be a problem. She may just be a quiet piggy.
Make sure you weight her weekly as part of routine care but weigh daily if you have any health concerns.
Does she have another guinea pig to live with? Piggies are highly social animals and need to be kept in pairs. This is even more important for youngsters who are desperate for companionship

For completeness of information, when we talk about adopting, it means adopting from a reputable rescue centre.
In the UK, where the forum is based, breeding is unregulated, anybody do it from their back garden with no knowledge thereby causing the same potential problems for an unsuspecting owner - missexing, already pregnant piggies etc

My Ted never squeaked properly, he always did “air squeaks” too. It was a reedy strange sound compared to his sibling brother Bill who could squeak very loud when food was coming. Ted lived u til he was almost 6 years old and his voice never changed. I asked about his voice and my vet said it was of no concern.
Has she got a female/neutered boar companion, that’s very important. Young piggies often learn from others how to squeak just like human babies learn how to talk

She has been fed Timothy hay, and alfalfa hay, along with water accessible when needed. She has two other piggies with her, one that is two years old which has had a litter of her own so she's had experience with other youngsters, and a one year old which is the daughter of the two year old.

I forgot to add she gets veggies daily. Romaine lettuce, carrots, and peppers. Carrots would be every half a week, along with the peppers. Then lettuce two times a day for morning and dinner. Sometimes she gets a strawberry as a treat

Don’t feed alfalfa hay. It isn’t a grass hay and isn’t needed

Make sure to only feed carrots and fruit every occasionally - no more then once a week only

I have an air squeaker too! Definitely not short of some "guidance" from her elders, either :))

She's always seemed fine, occasionally you get a full (quiet) wheek but most of the time it sounds a bit half-arsed.
