Hi, I have been cutting all four of my Guinea pigs' nails over the last two days. Mostly, I've had no problems, but on one Guinea pig's hind foot, there is at least one nail that is uncuttable. I have been cutting nails for six months now so I know what I'm doing but this nail refuses to cut. I'm pretty sure the quick isn't even visible and its like the nail has died.

NOTE: this is one nail on one hind foot, but she was getting too wriggly and I couldn't check the others on the same foot. It's possible the whole foot has got problems. Her other three feet are fine, all nails are cut.

I take Chock to the vet to have his nails cut as i cant see the vain that runs through them and he gets a check up at the same time
He's perfectly fine and healthy

A couple of things:
Her nails are white and I can see that there is no quick in the nail anymore.
It seems a bit pointless to take her to the vet for one nail, but I might have to get the entire foot checked.
The nail is physically indestructible. When squeezing the clippers, the nail doesn't even bend and it doesn't dent it. It's like trying to cut a rock.

Is it growing? What clippers are you using?

We use these, they are ace

I think it's stopped growing. Because she's so squirmy I've only been able to cut it once before, a few months ago, and its long and curled. I'm using small human nail clippers, I tried those kinds of clippers before and they wouldn't cut, just squeezed the nails. I'm going to try to get her to the vet soon to take a look, because I'm not sure if the rest of the foot is affected or not. She hasn't let me look. I'm worried something might be wrong.

I haven't had any problems cutting any other nails, just this one.

She may have stumped or injured her nail/quick, so it is no longer growing normally. There is likely not a lot you can do, but if you can get it checked, then you will have at least peace of mind.

Yeah, we're probably going to take her. She's calmed down today so I checked the rest of her foot. The nail next to it has the same problem. The third nail is fine. It's just weird!

Perhaps a fungal issue?
