Our guinea pig Marley is currently not well we are unsure why but with believe it to be a dental issue. Usually my mum would post on here but I have decided to just to ask what this may be,it's a squishy and very bad smelling substance that I think may have come from his bum. Does anyone know what this is?
Thank you

Has your piggy been seen by a vet to diagnose dental issues?
We cannot know what the substance is.
All we can do is advise you have your piggy seen by a vet as well as guiding you to our emergency care guides regards daily weight checks and syringe feeding.

Have you been weighing your piggy weekly as routine?
Please switch to daily weight checks now you have health concerns and step in with syringe feeding if weight is being lost.

Thank you so much for the response,an expert vet a few weeks ago managed to rasp at this back teeth due to them and the front overlapping he has been to the vets once since then but again they can't find anything specific that's going on,but it seems like something in the dental area. But they haven't been able to figure out exactly why he's struggling to eat,but me and my mum have be syringe feeding him plenty for a while now and we always try to do our best for them. Thank you 🤍

Are you weighing him daily?
Is he pooping properly?

So he is still struggling to eat since the dental? Is the vet experienced in piggy dentals specifically?

We are trying to weigh him daily but his weight only changes slightly which is what the vets were able to determine it's just he seems to want to eat but be unable to like he opens his mouth quite wide and he seems to struggle when eating. Yes he is still struggling, she's experienced in everything guinea pig related from what I know, usually it's my mum who would post on here so I'm very new on here but I just wanted to see if I could get any other opinions on here too.

I missed the question about pooping,no he isn't not properly, often diarrhea and very unformed poos. He's been given medicines from the vets for this too and pain meds in case he is in any pain.

If his weight is stable each day then that means you are probably getting the correct amount of syringe feed into him to stop weight loss - you are aiming for a minimum of 60ml of syringe feed per day to maintain weight each day. That is the best you can hope for until his issues are dealt with fully and he can independently eat enough hay again.

We cannot know what else might be going wrong.
We do see piggies have dentals and then still not be able to eat and it can be because the dental hasn’t been done properly or the issue misdiagnosed.

Yes we are definitely syringing him plenty. He still seems happy at times, especially outside he's very adventurous and loves to be nosey at what our other guinea pig gizmo is up to as they can't be together they were once bonded but the bond broke. Thank you so much for the advice,I'm sorry if I worded anything wrong or missed any questions, again I'm new to this but I just wanted to see other people's opinions. I really appreciate your help :) thank you so much.

Diarrhoea is considered an urgent situation due to the risk of dehydration and vet advice should always be sought in the case of diarrhoea
