Hello everyone. I got a female guinea pig 2 and a half weeks ago. She is eating pellets fine. And hay ok.... she is getting better at it because at the pet store they only fed pellets. But she is eating a decent amount. I am cutting back on the pellets slowly so she doesn't over eat them. Anyways, she won't even look at them. She jumps back from them. I have tried carrots, parsley and celery. Please help. I don't want her to get a vitamin c deficiancy.

It does take time for piggies to try new things, have you tried bell peppers and coriander? Great sources of vit C.

Also, is she on her own? Getting her a friend will help a lot, they feel more secure together and will probably be more open to trying new things :)

Just introduce veggies slowly especially if she's only a baby she won't know what they are also they could give her an upset tummy. I adopted a 2 year old boar who doesn't seem to have had veggies before so I have to sit with him and show him that they're food and he sees the girls eat them too and I think that helps. Sometimes dipping them in a little bit of water really helps I don't know why but it does lol x

I had the same problems years ago with a pig taken from a shop, fed only with pellets. He refused most of vegs. He had no problem with vit C because I gave him a supplement, but he paid the bill of this wrong style of eating so much dried food (Oxbow, not the bad pellets!)... Do all your best for teaching your piggie to eat in a healthy way, fresh grass, some vegs and as less pellets as possible. I give supplement of vit C to my piggies, too, although they eat correctly. As I always said previously in other posts, I recommend Cebion drops because it is easily dosed and it has a good taste appreciated by piggies. And it has for sure the vit C declared.

I've nibbled (or pretended to nibble, same idea) on veggies where the pigs can see so they know it's okay to eat. Especially if they've never tried it before and are unsure as to whether it's safe. They learn from watching older guinea pigs eat what's safe, so if they haven't had that opportunity then they're gonna be wary of new foods.

I eat new food in front of them too, it seems to help :))

Yes unfortunately pet shops don't have much of an idea of bonding so they say that to make a sale... It's really sad.

Piggies love and need each other's company, just like people some piggies don't get on with certain pigs but with the help of a good rescue you can find them a much loved companion which boosts their lives considerably :)

I had the same problem with my piggies when I first got them. I don't think they had ever had veggies before and for months would only eat cucumber and tomato and just have a nibble of everything else. When I tried coriander/cilantro on them though it was a instant hit and they have loved it ever since so I definitely try that with yours. Eight months later they eat pretty everything but getting them to eat hay has been a six month battle which we might finally be winning. Just keep giving them a range of veg and they will eat them eventually. Maybe try taking away the pellets when you give them their veg so they can't ignore them for the pellets.
