Guinea Pig Vommiting And Struggling To Stand Up

Okay, so this morning I went down to my guinea pigs to feed them and one of them was lying on the floor where they sleep, so I panicked and fed her some grass. She had green down her nose and when I put her back down she tried to walk but kept on falling over. She's only about 8 months old and I'm really really concerned because she wasn't like this yesterday.. does anyone know what has happened? I haven't fed her anything unusual

OKAY PLEASE we have NO money for a vet on Sunday- they are all over £150. We have no idea what to do and we can only get her an appointment tomorrow... does anyone know what we can do for now
 
Guinea pigs cannot vomit, so one of two things could be happening.

1) she has something trapped in her mouth/throat and is choking

2) she is in an advanced state of bloat and the fluid is caused by her stomach reacting and could be torsion. This is really painful.

In either case a sign of fluid coming back out is very serious and often comes before a pig passes away.

All you can do now is rush her straight to the vet, even if if to have her PTS.

If it is bloat/ torsion it's really painful so I would personally take the hit of £150 and help her pass away without suffering.

There are cheap all day vet services in most urban areas which only ask for a small supplement during day time hours. Please have your piggy seen asap as an emergency.

Rodents do not vomit; if looks like they do and if they are apathetic, then they are in a very bad state, whether that is a stroke, a heart attack, blockage in some point of their throat/ digestive system or organ failure.
 
Unfortunately inability to swallow and stand is probably a guinea pig in very significant distress. She should see a vet urgently, but unfortunately at that stage most of my pigs have passed away fairly quickly thereafter in spite of medical care. I hope for a better outcome for your pig! Agree with the others that rodents lack the ability to vomit and fluid coming out in such a way is very very serious. Was there any further updates and were you able to see a vet offering daytime services on a Sunday?

As you have just discovered the cost of "out of hours" vets are considerably more expensive than regular appointments and I truly hope you managed to find you beloved guinea pig some veterinary help in time.
Sadly its a very rare thing indeed to go through any pets life and not require medical attention and the most "inconvenient and expensive times" at least once, which is why the majority of owners try to keep a little by each month to put towards vets fees. I am so sorry that the emergency care was currently beyond your budget but many vets with thankfully offer chances to pay in installments where there are cases of the fee being a little too much to pay out all in one go. It is always worth asking them.

I am very much hoping that everything was less bleak today and that both you and the un-named guinea pig are doing much better.
 
Hi, I forgot to reply, sorry.. Anyway my mum took her to the vet on the Monday whilst I was in school. (She also seemed to be a little bit better), but when I got home my mum told me that the vet could not diagnose her with anything, that she had lost a lot of weight and was critically ill. She said she thought it could have been a stoke but was not certain. Anyway, my mum told me that the vet had put her down.. The vet told us to keep the other piggie on her own for about 2 weeks as she may have caught the same thing. She's doing okay, and we've been giving her a lot of attention because it's sad when a piggie is having to be on her own :(. Anyway, we are going to look for a rescue and visit there tomorrow in hope of getting her a few friends!
 
I'm so sorry I had that happen with my first piggy Vinny. One day she was fine and the next I awoke to a piggy with a tilted head,green fluid from mouth and inability to walk and refusal to eat. We took her to the vets asap but they couldn't establish what it was. They said it's a possible stroke but that they hadn't seen a case like that before. I belive it was either a stroke or meningitis but either way she's not in pain anymore.
 
Yeah... I was really expecting some good news that she may have been given medication but you never know unfortunately

I hope you find some lovely friends at the rescue for your bereaved guinea pig
 
So sorry to hear about your girl. If vet bills are an issue, may I suggest putting money aside every month towards them, or please consider getting them insured, it doesn't cost a lot each per month & is really good for big things like operations, or having to take them in for emergency treatment :) It probably is wise to also not take on too many piggies, only the amount you can afford, maybe just find one friend for her & insure them both :)
