So my 2-3 year old male guinea pig has lost a lot of weight, you can feel his bones it’s not very nice. I’ve been feeding him critical care to try and help him gain weight but it doesn’t seem to be working. Anyway, his belly has become quite fat but you can still feel his bones. His belly is squishy it’s not hard at all but he hates it when I touch his belly, he makes a sound like he’s in pain. I’ll be taking him to the vets but was wondering if anyone knows what this could be.

When did he start losing the weight, and how much has he lost and in what time period? How much critical care a day have You been feeding him? Has he been eating and pooping as usual? Poo output is 1-2 days behind. Hay is a hard one to judge on whether they’re eating enough. Has his behaviour changed at all?Piggies generally don’t like being touched on the belly so that could be why.

Weight loss could be a number of things but the best way to find out is with a trip to the vet. Hopefully they will get to the bottom of it quickly.

PS start weighing him daily rather than weekly now.

he started losing weight 3-4 weeks ago. I can’t remember how much he weighed before hand but he now weighs 790g. He’s eating, drinking and popping normally, he’s fed critical care by the amount it says on the packaging, so 3 times a day he has it. His behaviour hasn’t changed at all, however he did almost die 2 weeks ago, he had food lodged in his throat and became extremely weak luckily we managed to help him before it was to late. But other than his weight everything else is normal, he has a cyst on his back that keeps coming back but the vets said that it shouldn’t cause an issue for him and it won’t affect his quality of life.

Ok. Weighing weekly is a good way to spot some problems, but you need to weigh him daily now. And note it down somewhere. Have you got him an appointment yet?

yes the earliest I can get an appointment is next Friday. And I can’t take him to a different vet because this is the only vet that knows about rabbits and guinea pigs

Do you mean tomorrow or next week? He really needs to be seen and next week is too far away. Whereabouts are you (don’t have to be specific). Maybe we can help. Have you looked at the vet locator on here?

How is his weight from yesterday - has it gone up, down or is it the same?

Friday next week, his weight is going up. He’s still doing completely fine, he’s eating, drinking and pooping normally. Still got his sassy attitude and thinks he’s boss of the other animals. I’ll have to try and get him an appointment on Tuesday, if you think Friday is too far away.

Did you weigh him yesterday? How much has he put on? It may be the critical care topup. I think if he’s lost as much weight as you say he should be seen sooner. How old is he again?

he weighs 810g now, he’s 2-3 years old. I think he may have lost weight because my other guinea pig he was housed with was not very nice to him And wouldn’t let him eat. Now he’s on his own he’s doing much better.

Did you separate them recently? Was there two of everything so other piggy couldn’t hoard all the food?
810 is generally small for his age. Hope you can get an appointment soon. Keep up with weighing daily.

i separated them roughly 2 weeks ago and there was 3 bowls for food and 1 bottle + 1 bowl for water.

Ok. Just keep an eye on it and see when he can be examined by the vet.
