Hi, my Guinea pig has recently lost his life long companion. He is almost 5 years old and looks sad and lost without his friend. I am thinking of introducing another guinea pig to him, would this be a good idea and would it be better to get a baby pig? Thanks for any help :) xx

it depends, given his age if you get another baby boar to keep him company then the newbie will be on his own in a few years time when your piggy now passes to rainbow bridge, you have the possibility of 2 females that have been neutered as then they have each other for the company but neutered females are hard to find.

is he happy on his own, or does he seem off?

How long has been alone for? If he's only just lost his friend then I would wait a few weeks. I think that just like humans guinea pigs need to kinda grieve. Just spend lots of time with him, and give him lots of cuddles and when he starts perking up a bit, then get him a new friend. Seeing as he's quite old. you can either leave him on his own or maybe get a pair of already bonded baby boars, or a pair of sows (if he's neutered) would be best. If you plan on getting baby boars, because it will be trio, it is posisble for them to get along but you need to be prepared for if they don't.

The best thing to do is take him to a rescue so he can choose his own friend younger or older let it be his choice. :)

So sorry for your loss. x

firstly i would give your piggy a bath9did i just write that :o :o :o) then scrub his home and get rid of the scent of his friend. then if possible i would bring him inside where he can have you for company. perhaps give him a teddy to cuddle up too. then in a few weeks time if you want to give him a frend/s then take him to a rescue and let pick out his friend. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
welcome to the forums from me and the girls in oz :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: and am so sorry for the lost of your piggy :'( :'( :'( RIP darling run free and find eternal peace, another angel in the heaven 0:) 0:) 0:) sending hugs to you and your piggy. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: please keep us posted O0 there is also a rescue section to this forum that you may want to have a browse at :-\ :-\ :-\ good luck O0

i dont think there is anything wrong with getting him a friend straight away, i think it can help them, especially if the pig is depressed, it worked for my boar when his cagemate passed.

i would take him to a rescue, and there you can try him with other pigs so he can choose his own friend :) more likely to be successful O0

Sorry to hear about your loss, Chloemily .... as suggested give him plenty of tender loving care and lots of cuddles.

It is always difficult when you have an older guinea pig who loses his friend. Do you get another one and if so what age?
Have you any rescues near you?

My piggie lost her beloved cage mate just over a week ago, although she's been more subdued than usual she is eating fine and being quite cuddly. I am travelling 80miles today to meet a rescue piggie that I am hoping she will get on with. I tried all my local rescues but none had any guineapigs I could try her with. I met a girl yesterday though who has 3 sows that are pregnant (her boar broke into the girls pen) so I am going to get one or two babies in a few weeks too. Wishing you the best of luck with finding another friend for your piggie!

:)

Thanks for all your help and kind comments, I live in Hertfordshire, does anyone know of any rescue centre near by? x

Take a look at the Rescue section on here and google "Guinea Pig Rescues" - there's a big list by county. Good luck! O0
