Hi! I have two guinea pigs (almost 2 years old now) and all of a sudden (literally today) one of them has started sneezing and has a runny nose. I cleared away the bits of snot/ nose discharge that formed on his fur and then he sneezed and more came out.

I was searching around and the most common thing Is that he has URI but he doesn't have any of the other symptoms at the moment. Is it possible he could have a cold? I emptied out his hutch area and put more hay in yesterday so could that be the problem? I'm taking both of my pigs to the vet on Friday anyway for a check-up, should I mention it then?

Please help!

Guinea pigs do not get colds.
The sneezing and runny nose can be caused by dust in the airways. Are you using a different type of hay to normal that contains more dust? Has it happened again when you topped up their hay again today?
Ultimately, only a vet can tell you if they are becoming ill so Keep a close eye and definitely speak to the vet about it. Go to the vet earlier than Friday if further symptoms of a URI start (noisy breathing, hooting for example) or if the sneezing becomes more frequent

Hey! Thanks so much for replying! I'm using the same type of hay as before which is why I was a bit puzzled. I'll monitor him throughout the day. Thank you again!

I would also start weighing your guinea pig daily at the same time.
Often the first real symptom of illness is weight loss.
You should always weigh weekly, but switch to daily if you have concerns.

It's great you already have an appointment set up for Friday - what was that for?
I though all non essential vet visits were currently on hold in the UK?

Update: He's stopped sneezing and the snot has stopped too. I think dust in the air was bothering him! Thanks again!
