One of my guineas seems to be losing hair from her legs. It is a very gradual process but she now has quite bald legs. The hair is not coming out in clumps or tufts and she is not scratching at all. She seems perfectly fine in herself. She has had fungal problems in the past but this has always been just one patch on her back which clears up very quickly with treatment. I know they can lose hair with a hormone imbalance but could that just be on the legs? Another thing I'm thinking is perhaps she is barbering herself. Any ideas?

Have now noticed the hair loss is on her tummy too. If it is an hormonal imbalance do I need to do anything about it?

Can you get a pic? Hormonal hair-loss is usually down the sides, I think. It could be start of mites - they don't always scratch madly, I've got a couple who are prone to baldy bellies and I always Ivomec them and it sorts it out.

If you take a pic and put it on here or email to Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas, she's very good at email diagnosis for skin conditions!

Here's the pic. Not an easy angle to take from! Also not a very big picture. If you click on it it's slightly bigger.

Hard to say...I'm interpreting the picture as a huge patch of hairloss over legs and also her abdomen too - is that right?

Cysts are possible (treatable by HCG/Chorulon injection).
The only other case I have seen with such hairloss was fungal, thus it may be worth bathing in an antifungal shampoo.
I have a sow (Saffron) with long-term fungal issues; since she was 3 weeks old she has had constantly sensitive skin - that being the only constant symptom (i.e. no red skin, no hairloss) - but a problem flares up every once in a while in localised patches of her body. It is always fungal and always limited to one patch. Right now she has two large patches of hairloss and flaky skin on her rump. After I bathe her (once weekly until it clears up) and twice daily I apply an antifungal cream containing miconazole - I use a brand sent by a friend in America but I believe Daktarin cream is the UK equivalent.
