Some time ago my guinea pig started having diarrhea.
So I kept him on a diet only with hay and pellets and it was off for a few days. Then when I introduced green fodder or other vegetables it started all over again. This happend I think at least 2 times and I really don`t know what to do...

Hi there and welcome to the forum.

Have you had any tests done at the vets to identify any gut related problems? Poo cultures can show up if there are bugs present (protozoa/bacteria).

If there is no clinical reason for the problem and it is down to gut sensitivity there are a few things that can help. Probiotics with added Vit C (Avipro is a good make) can help.

When introducing veggies back into a diet it's wise to only add one at a time, in very small amounts for 3 days to see if it causes a problem. If the problem reappears then withdraw that veg, go back to the hay and pellets only diet for a week and then try again with a different veg. If the veg causes no problem then you can try another in addition to the first, again in very small amounts to start with.

Hopefully by a process of elimination you can discover which veg to avoid.

Hello to you too
Overall he seems ok so I presume he doesn`t have any kind of bacteria...
It may be from the green fodder, pretty wierd since it`s like his favourite food and he`s been eating it almost everyday for a long time.
Many thanks anyway :)

Some pigs also have naturally sensetive bowels, try introducing hime to vetgies slowly. Like start with 25grams a day max and build it up. It takes time if they haven't had vegs in a long time or never.

Also try to avoid things with a lot of sugar, guinea pigs can't progress sugar well.

also what types of veg are you giving him? very wet veg like cucumber, celery, tomatoes, etc...can cause them to have loose poo, cut back on anything like this and give root veg and leafy greens.

I forgot, if the problem keeps occuring again and again have your pig checked out for sensetive bowels by a vet. There are excellent diets for those, I had one who gotten old on few vetgies.

Hey thnx for advice all:D

well for now he`s fine, he`s on a diet again:D

was wondering...can`t it be a consequence of him getting old? Since we have him for almost five years now, and as far as I can remember he never had this problem before, and used to eat all kinds of stuff.
