My guinea pig was diagnosed by a vet yesterday with a lip infection , the infection started with a C , can’t put my finger on what exactly it was called but he said to cotton bud the affected area with sterile solution and then add some gel he has given me, I’ve tried so hard to apply the above two things, yesterday my boy played ball and let me do it, but this morning he his going crazy at me, as soon as I go near him with the solution he is crying, wriggling, even in a towel , he even bit me! After 10 minutes of him crying and having a massive go at me I gave up, he was in too much stress and discomfort, I managed to get a little of the cream on it but I think it’s the smell of the solution that is putting him off and the obvious fact he’s in a lot of pain. Any one have any tips of calming down my little man? He’s so stressed at the moment and I just feel I’m making everything worse for him :(

Yeah it was, hes just going crazy at me :( even my friend has tried to help me he is throwing his head back and biting, not like him at all, and I really don’t want to make the matters worse for him, I’ve been told to do this twice a day, but I can’t even get it on him :(

Hi! If direct application is too uncomfortable, I would recommend to ring up the clinic and ask whether your vet would be prepared to replace the offending solution with a systemic oral medication that can be given by syringe.

Here are tips on what you can do with uncooperative piggies. A mixture of piggy whispering love and dominance, combined with lot of fussing can also help. Piggies accept medication a bit better if you assert your authority but still sympathise and make sure to tell them that you still love them. It is always difficult when the medication is unpleasant or stings.

Thanks so much, it is already starting to look better so I think I may stick with it and see how we get on, I’ve come up with a plan to distract him by offering red peppers, whilst my partner quickly dabs the solution on and the the gel. The vet did tell me to basically pull the scabs off with the solution until it bleeds but I just can’t bring myself to cause that much pain to him, if even me just dabbing it makes him so upset, as I said it’s getting better so I presume what I’m doing is working :) I’ll keep you updated thanks so much for the advice xx
