Hi I am new to this :tu:
I have a question to ask
I am doing a case study at college on a new arrival of a Guinea pig with ringworm at a rescues centre that accommodates a range of different animals.
can anyone help on how I can provide the care for the guinea pig in a rescue centre environment?
Thanks :P

Best information available is our ringworm guide that gives info about care for the piggy, quarantine, deep cleaning and preventative measures to prevent cross contamination between species (inc human)

Good luck with your case study. If this is a real pig and not just a hypothetical scenario please take all necessary hygiene measure and have it promptly seen by a vet.

Strict quarantine in a different room well away from other pets and strict hygiene and good quality disinfection to prevent carrying any spores across are key. It is also important that you bathe any guinea pig at least once to make sure that it doesn't carry on any infection in the form of spores sitting in its coat after the end of treatment. I have had ringworm carried in twice by piggies this way, once by a previous ringworm piggy and once by an unaffected piggy in contact with ringworm piggies during quarantine and treatment.
A mandatory quarantine in another room for any incoming guinea pigs is part of what our list of criteria that we look for in good standard guinea pig rescues we will recommend to our members.
Importance Of Quarantine

The basic rules that are laid out in our hygiene guide apply to any setting, whether is a pair, a room full of guinea pigs (like I have) or a multi-species rescue centre. The tips in our ringworm care guide have been learned the hard way; that is why they work. Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

PS1: In my last outbreak in a room of 30 guinea pigs I have been able to contain the outbreak to the one affected guinea pig with immediate quarantine and deep clean disinfection of the whole room with a proven ringworm spore killing vet grade disinfectant (F10). And of course a bath at the end of the acute phase to prevent any spores being carried back into the guinea pig room!
The reason why ringworm in shop guinea pigs is currently such a problem is because it takes a lot of effort to get on top of ringworm spores which can stay active for up to 18 months.

PS2: If you want to know how you deal with ringworm on a massive scale, contact or look at the various videos from Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue who have taken in 410 guinea pigs (mostly sows and their babies) from a massive hoarding case gone way of hands (NorCal 700) in last October. Ringworm was affecting many of them, including the over 500 babies born at the rescue. All over 900 guinea pigs have required at least one bath. The rescue were able to deal with it by creating special premises in their hastily evacuated horse barn.
