Hi,

Our normal vet office is closed because of a snow storm, so I thought I post my question here for some advice.

Our little Guinea Pig, Albert, has an URI. He's been on Baytril for about 2 weeks. He still has a snotty nose with green discharge.

Should we continue the treatment of Baytril?

He also appears to have developed red splotches on his nose and it almost seems like it's balding. We are wondering if it could be some kind of fungal infection because he also has some dustiness and roughness on the edges of his ears.

Also, any tips on how to care for guinea pigs with URI would be appreciated.

HELP

Thank you

oh gosh i cant answer sorry, someone will come along and help.

Hope piggy is ok x

ps/ have you checked the vets havent left an emergency contact number?

Hello my boy Artie had a URI his cleared up within three weeks have you took him back to the vets it sounds like he has something else as well as a URI....is your vet cavy savvy? Whereabouts are you located? Someone on here might be able to recommend a good cavvy vet as not all vets are knowledgeable with guinea pigs! :) Artie was suffering from an eye infection at the same time as suggering from a URI.

I'd reccomend keeping him in a seperate cage from other piggies, and keeping up his fluids and food, you could try putting porriage oats into his pellet mix to keep his weight up, or if hes not eating mash his pellets in hot water (wait for it too cool before serving) and spoon feed him mushed pellets. I'd reccomend keeping an eye on him, and I gave artie unlimited amount of pellets during this time, as well as giving him plenty of veggies with vit c and energy.

Hope the little fella feels well soon :)

Keep him on the baytril until you can get to a vet. Sounds like he needs some more different medicine to help him get the fluid off his chest/sinus's.

Please get him to a vet as soon as you can. Keep him warm and indoors, make sure that ** piggie isnt on woodshavings/saw dust as this could make it worse. Some say you can use vicks vapour rub if you dab a bit on the end of his nose. but I'm not sure considering he has funny skin on his nose. You can also make a fume cage to help if you wanted.

x.

Sorry to hear your piggie isn't feeling so well.

I lost a piggie to an URI after rubbish vet advice was very distressing for me and my piggie.

As others have said remain on baytril until you return to the vets. Make sure you are going to cavy savvy vet....this was my mistake! Respiratory infections can develop into pneumonia if not treated properly and some are very tricky to treat. I have heard of a medication called zythriomax (not sure on spelling), hopefully someone can expand on this for you, but I know it is used with stubborn URI.

As for the skin I am unsure...sorry!

Wishing your piggie a swift recovery x

Here's a few pictures of his nose. Sorry, one of them is upside-down.

We use carefresh as bedding and he's in a new cage of his own.

He seems to be eating well. We've been giving him carrots, oranges, broccoli, vitamin C tablets, tons of pellets, and hay.

I'm a little concerned about his fluid intake. How much should he be drinking right now?

We've got 17 inches of snow right now, hopefully the vet can make it in tomorrow.

Also, what is a fume cage? I couldn't find anything on google

Missouri, USA :)

We chose this website because of all the awesome suggestions we read on here on other posts.

Plus, we couldn't find a good one that was *.S. based.

Yes, he's still eating good. They are going to try a different antibiotic. I'm not sure of the exact name, but it has Sulfa/Trimeth Susp printed on the label.

We also believe he may have ring worm, So they gave us Griseofulvin to give him.

This guy just can't catch a break.
