Hi all,

Was wondering if any of you piggy owners out there have had guinea pigs with UTI problems and how did your piggies overcome this? A few days ago I noticed that my lemon Agouti pig (Spice) was quite squeaky during urinating, she was quite quiet as well (she's normally the loudest squeaker out of the two and is the first to run to the front of the cage aswell). That was when I decided to make a vet appointment, luckily they had an appointment that day which we brought her in- the vet examined her (the usual checking her heart beat/breathing, weight, temperature, checking around her nether regions etc) and believed it was an infection but in order to actually prove this she had to have a urine sample taken which luckily she managed to pass urine there and then. The results came back that she has a UTI as her wee was rather weak and red in colour, so she has been given antibiotics twice a day and pain killer once a day (for around 7 days). As above I have stated how long did it take your guinea pigs to overcome this and what did you do to make them feel comfortable and any tips I could maybe have? I clean any wet bits out in the cage as Spice has a tendency to wee and lay right on it (as she is quite lazy haha), she drinks plenty of water and she is passing urine quite frequently now due to her medication taking in place). I was also wondering if any of you owners have experienced any smells during your pigs having UTI? At the moment I have to wipe clean everyday near her bum/wee area as it really stinks like strong pee (I'm guessing due to the infection).

Sorry for the long essay but hearing stories about your UTI pigs and any tips would be appreciated- thank you :)

the only thing i would say is that the course needs to be alot longer usually. other than that, it all sounds ok. what antibiotic is she on? and is the pain relief metacam? :)

maisie battled with uti's. mainly the smell was quite stale. x

Yes the smell can be strong and quite unpleasant. Usually Fluffy was feeling a bit better within a day or so of starting antibiotics and metacam. We supported her by giving her dandelion leaves as they are diuretic and trying to up her water intake even though she drank lots anyway to help flush infection out, by giving her an extra slice of cucumber and not drying off veggies before feeding her. Hopefully she will be feeling better soon.

I have had little Stewart with a UTI, his pee was red and he was very unhappy :( They do cheer up very quickly though once the treatment has been started. I can't say much more than has already been said though - watery veg, they should be drinking plenty and keeping an eye on the appetite (antibiotics can make tummies a little upset, so if they are then invest in some probiotics you can give too.)

I have had a few with a UTI and they were on antibiotics (Septrin) for at least 10 days plus pain relief and plenty of fluids. What antibiotics is Spice on?

Sorry all for the late reply, totally forgot my password :td:. Spice is on Metacam Pain Killers 0.24ml once a day and septrin pediatric suspension (antibiotics) 0.6ml twice a day :) we have been keeping an eye on her frequently and she seems to be a lot more perky in herself and managing to eat as well which is a bonus. This Friday she is going to have another Urine Sample taken to see how she is so fingers crossed she will be okay :) :tu:

That all sounds promising. Glad she is on Septrin.
