Hi all,
Was wondering if any of you piggy owners out there have had guinea pigs with UTI problems and how did your piggies overcome this? A few days ago I noticed that my lemon Agouti pig (Spice) was quite squeaky during urinating, she was quite quiet as well (she's normally the loudest squeaker out of the two and is the first to run to the front of the cage aswell). That was when I decided to make a vet appointment, luckily they had an appointment that day which we brought her in- the vet examined her (the usual checking her heart beat/breathing, weight, temperature, checking around her nether regions etc) and believed it was an infection but in order to actually prove this she had to have a urine sample taken which luckily she managed to pass urine there and then. The results came back that she has a UTI as her wee was rather weak and red in colour, so she has been given antibiotics twice a day and pain killer once a day (for around 7 days). As above I have stated how long did it take your guinea pigs to overcome this and what did you do to make them feel comfortable and any tips I could maybe have? I clean any wet bits out in the cage as Spice has a tendency to wee and lay right on it (as she is quite lazy haha), she drinks plenty of water and she is passing urine quite frequently now due to her medication taking in place). I was also wondering if any of you owners have experienced any smells during your pigs having UTI? At the moment I have to wipe clean everyday near her bum/wee area as it really stinks like strong pee (I'm guessing due to the infection).
Sorry for the long essay but hearing stories about your UTI pigs and any tips would be appreciated- thank you
