Hi,

I've posted before on this topic, but I'm banging my head against a wall and I wondered if anyone had some insight.

My 3 1/2 year old boar, Niles, has been refusing/unable to open his mouth properly for about a month now. We took him to a vet, he was diagnosed with malocclusion, and at first seemed better but deteriorated again. We took him back for another dental 2 weeks ago, and we've been assured by the vet it went perfectly, but he still won't open his mouth.

Here's the weird part. We've been to 2 different Guinea pig savvy vets (our are amazing with them, and we saw one recommended on here) and neither can work out what on earth is wrong with him. His teeth are perfect now, he's had an x-ray and there's nothing wrong in terms of his jaw bone or teeth growing internally. There's no sores, ulcers, or lacerations to the inside of his mouth or in his throat. There's no muscle damage, swelling or inflammation. Painkillers make zero difference. The vets can manipulate his jaw to work perfectly, it has a full range of movement and he shows zero signs of discomfort. He will (slowly) eat his dry pellets, which are round and hard, but he will not eat anything else. Veg, even cut smaller than his pellets, falls out and he makes little/no attempt to eat it. He won't touch hay. Even his favourite snacks don't tempt him, but he dutifully eats his pellets all day.

He's eating enough, his weight is stable, if not increasing. He is super bouncy and happy and full of beans, barrels around the garden, begs for food when we open the fridge, and makes a beeline for my plants, but instead of opening his mouth and munching away like he used to, he just bumps his face into them and doesn't open his mouth, until he gives up.

Physically he's fine on paper. I'm absolutely pulling my hair out- any ideas?

I've just realised that you've posted another thread about your piggy. I know you've said it would be difficult to get to Northampton, but I do think it would be well worth the trip to see Simon Maddock.
I think Simon will spot something the other vet has maybe missed. Good chance

It's beyond difficult for me to get there-- I work full time, odd hours, and don't have a car, and am the only income. I can't get across the country, it's not a possibility at the moment.

Would it be possible to organise a piggy train to get your piggies to see Simon? @Wiebke I don't know who runs the piggy train.

That's very understandable 👍. It's just one of the best vets you will come across, so it's so wroth trying to se if you could get there. Maybe there is another good vet a little closer?

@Stewybus is running the piggy train, but this is on behalf of rescue piggies and not for private purposes.

Where are you located? Perhaps we can organise a forum member transport.
