Hello all.

I am very new to guinea pig owning (apart from as a child nore than 30 years ago!) & have just registered on the forum.

One of my daughters guinea pigs (female, approx 4 months old) has developed a sore patch on her shoulder which she has been scratching. It has been red for a few days. It has suddenly this evening developed into quite a nasty wound & seems to be causing her some distress. Her sister also had a small reddish itchy patch but it seemed to clear up after a few days so we weren't unduly worried until this evening.

Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

hi welcome to the forum..

its poss its either mites or a fungal infection which both cause hairloss, wounds, fromthe scratching..

i would take both to the vets has they will **** need ivermec injetions to clear up the mites or cream if its fungal if left untreated its can kill them in time and cause a lot of pain for them xx

Hi, I'm sorry your guinea is not well. This could be mites, or a fungal infection, guineas are prone to a number of skin problems, but most are easily treated. A picture might help identify what it is, but I would suggest a trip to the vet is the going to be the best thing. Take both of them as they may both be carrying something, even though one is not displaying any symptoms any more. It sounds like it needs treatment ASAP anyway, the sooner the better for the guinea, it sounds quite sore. Do you have a good vet you can take them to? It is worth checking before you go to make sure the vet has some experience treating guinea pigs. I hope she will get better soon.

Many thanks for the prompt & helpful replies. I was going to take Susie to the vet anyway but I think I'll have to take Poppy as well. We've got a VetsforPets near us so hopefully they'll be OK.
