guinea piggy is ill :(

:...ive got a male guinea pig whos 5. Recently hes been off his food so we took him to the vets where they couldnt see a problem and sent us home with some recovery.
we had him on the recovery for 3 days and he started eating again
but then his teeth ended up slanted so we took him back to the vets again today.
they filed his teeth down but now he doesnt seem to want to eat :S
could he just be getting used to having short teeth or is there something else wrong.
my mum thinks he might just be in shock because he was really scared and jumpy at the vets.

recovery: its like a powder that you mix with water and syringe feed you piggy. It provides them with nutrients and stuff

Quite often, the problem is with the back teeth (molars) which are overgrown and not the front teeth, so by filing down the front teeth, your vet could have done more damage.

Could you try and contact the Cambridge Cavy trust for the address of a rodentologist in your area to have a look at your boy's teeth?

It is not easy to get a guinea pig to eat after dental treatment, and you may need puree or chop up veg very finely, and soak his pellets in a little bit of water for him to try and eat.

hes had a little bit of cucumber and hes out nibbling grass now il see what hes like later then think about a rodentologist.
our local vets said his back teeth were a bit long but he could grind them down by chewing things. However if he wasnt eating still they would have to operate on his mouth with an anisthetic but he said that he probably wouldnt wake up
and yehh il keep weighing him he looks quite happy in the garden now

I would recommend finding a better, piggy savvy vet - your vet clearly isn't!

You won't get rid of any issues until your piggy's back teeth have been treated properly, the sooner, the better because his front teeth won't have a change to grow back right if he can't close his mouth right and chew properly because of his overgrown back teeth who not only prevent him from eating properly, but are also causing him increasing pain.

A guinea pig does have a very good chance of making it through GA with a very good piggy savvy or specialised exotics vet (guinea pigs count as "exotics"). A rodentologist, however, may be able to treat your boy without a GA at all, so it's worth to look for one as quickly as possible.

Oh gosh, run for the hills! This vet sounds awful! Go to a vet with an exotic specialist qualification before he does anymore harm

You could try the vets I use which are Abbey Vets in Pelton. The guy I see is called Christopher and he's been very good with my piggies, I'd strongly recommend him. Unfortunately there aren't any rodentologists in the area ( that I know of ) and there's a distinct lack of piggie savvy vets as well and it looks as though you may have been unlucky and hit one of them.
