Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if someone would be able to help me. I have a 3yo male Guinea, back in December he started making a strange face when eating and would constantly spit food out, this got worse and he had stopped eating entirely. He was interested in all his food but couldn't seem to eat it, so would give up. We took him to the vet and they couldn't figure out what was wrong, we started feeding him Critical Care which he would wolf down, he was obviously very hungry. We also put him on Metacam which helped but obviously didn't solve the problem. He has had various examinations, blood tests and X-rays but they never found anything wrong with his mouth. He was then placed on Tramadol and Sulfatrim as well which seemed to help the problem. He was eating totally fine by himself, eating lots of hay, nuggets, greens, grass and drinking very well. We did try the Critical Care with him at this point but he wouldn't take it, so we didn't force him as he wasn't hungry and was eating fine by himself. After a month of the antibiotics, we took him off them but kept the pain killers (lowered the dose) and he seemed to be fine. Whilst we never figured out the problem this mixture did seem to have helped him.
Anyway fast forward to now, his behaviour is very strange. For the last few days whenever we have put his grass or his greens into his cage, he walks over, looks at it, sniffs it and walks away. Today with his grass he was picking it up in his mouth and throwing it around (he has never done this before) but then just walked away uninterested. I have taken him out every day and gave offered him Critical Care which was very well received, can't get it in the syringe fast enough before he's wanting more. Figured something must be wrong with his mouth again but when I put him back in his cage he walked over to the grass and ate it all up? This has been the same thing that's happened for the past 4 days. He was sat there totally fine eating all his grass. I'm wondering whether he just likes the taste of Critical Care and is wanting to have more of that? My mum thought maybe he has been too hungry to stomach the grass but after his tummy is full he is happy to eat it. I can't see any explanation as there's no painkillers or anything in it. Of course, I'm happy to give him Critical Care if he likes it because its good for him but I'm worried something may be wrong again. I should add that he's been drinking very well and still eating his nuggets which he loves.
I'm sorry this was quite long but would be so grateful If anyone had any idea what might be going on? Thank you!
