Not sure if this is the right place to post this but don't know where else to ask. It is about my guinea pigs not the puppy so please read on.

I have just taken my puppy to get his injections and was offered a kennel cough vaccination for him as an add on. Anyway I asked my vet whether him having the vaccination will actually give him a bit of kennel cough that would be contagious to my guinea pigs. His reply was that guinea pigs can't catch kennel cough and I said I think they can because kennel cough is caused by the bacteria bordetella which is a deadly infection in guinea pigs, but he didn't seem to know? So anyway just wondering if anyone knows whether the puppy having this vaccination could be contagious to my precious piggies? I decided to leave it for now until I have a think about it. Thanks.

I'm thinking it would be best to get him the kennel cough injection because if not he could pass the illness to the guinea pigs anyway. At least if I get the injection I would know to keep them separate for a while and wash hands before handling the pigs rather than him getting kennel cough unexpectedly but it would still be really helpful to know whether they're at risk.

Have a search on here as part of me thinks there may have been a thread before.

Ide agree sian, prob best to get him vaccinated and then separate from piggies and wash your hands.
Same applies if you give spot on treatment to piggies as it has ivermectin in it its harmful to some breeds…..like sheepdog or collie breeds.
I have a collie and i have to keep him well away.
its one of those situations where your damned if do and damned if don't, but vaccinating and separating would be best

Hi I agree with Lawz, I'd get the puppy vaccinated and separate the puppy from the piggies for a good few weeks just to be safe. Keeping separate also means keeping the pup out of the same room as the pigs as it may sneeze or lick the cage which can transfer the bacteria to the pigs as it is air borne too - so I believe.

A URI can be VERY difficult to treat in piggies (coming from experience!) so I would not chance it.

Thanks for that @helen105281

I didn't even think of these things before I got the puppy and I'm now very worried. I am very over protective and panicky about my pigs anyway but this has added more worry. The puppy sleeps in my bedroom which is where me and my other half have cuddle time with the pigs in bed. Even if I didn't have them in my bedroom at the same time as it's been mentioned they could still get kennel cough through the air. Maybe I'll have to sleep downstairs on the couch with the puppy but on that thread it says he would be contagious for 3 days but tried to look elsewhere and seems it may be longer but not sure?

I didn't reply in time. Don't worry, just try to keep them seperate for a few days. They will be ok. 3 days is what's is written on the drug datasheet so 3 days should be fine.

Your doing the right thing by vaccinating your dog so please don't feel down about bei a responsible owner.
