So some of you may have read that my gorgeous Airedale Terrier Harvey passed away last week. Anyway I have wanted cats for a very long time but my boy would not tolerate them so it was always a no go. However since he left us my friend has since asked if I would like a kitten as she is struggling to find homes and I have decided to take two of them. They are not due to be born for a few weeks yet so will be at least 10 weeks till we get them.

Anyway to the point of my thread...

Does anyone have any advice with regards to raising kittens around guinea pigs. They will not be left un attended together. Just like I never did with the dog. The girls are currently in a cage in the living room but I will be upgrading them to a c&c at the end of the year all going well. The kittens main base will be the kitchen, the door to the living room is only open if I'm in the house. Also should I be planning to put a lid on my c&c?

Our cat loves our piggies, they lie together on the setee! But I wouldn't leave them without supervision. I would want a lid on the cage/c&c. Cats have instincts and if they see guinea pigs run, they could be tempted! They are only the size of a rat and our cat has caught those!

But generally I don't think thereis a problem with cats and guinea pigs!

I don't see an issue with keeping both as pets but I would keep them separate when the guineas are not in their cage (which should be cat proof). Some cats may not be interested in guinea pigs but cats are predators and they can easily kill or injure guineas so it's best to play it safe.

Thanks for all the replies. A lid it will be then and lots of supervision.

Our cat likes to watch my guinea pigs, which is harmless but she has taken to jumping on top of the cage, which scares them so I am careful to make sure the door to that room is shut unless someone is in it.
Funny thing is I've got them out in front her and she always runs away from them!
