I have 1 pig who is very friendly and amenable but more and more, the other 2 seem to think they're the boss of me :-) They refuse to move when I need them to and yesterday trying to get sweet natured pig in the pet basket to go to the vet, my boar pig headbutted my hand, because he didn't want to come out the basket himself. Is this normal? What have I failed to do with them that they think I'm lowest in the pecking order! (They're spoiled rotten and the behaviour def isn't fear).

Maybe it's just their personality? All of my piggies had/have different personalities. Nickel was definitely an attention hog, Penny is more laid-back, and Cocoa is just stubborn. It's just a guess but I hope this helped :)

My Finn would run to me to greet me and when I pet him he allows petting for a short time, then he headbutts my hand.
When petting gets longer he can tolerate he acts on it, which he has the right to do. Then I feed his veggies, and he lets me pet him a bit more.

I feel they have certain amount of tolerance level just like humans.

Headbutts are there way of telling you nicely they dont like something, respect their wishes is always my advice. One of our girls would let you stroke her for a while but then she'd have enough... that's fair enough

Hi! you may find our piggy whispering tips helpful in establishing your authority in guinea pig language, from telling a piggy that you want it to be part of your herd, to telling it off when it has misbehaved and also that you love it. Whenever you tell a piggy off, always start and finish with a gesture of love. This mimics the way socially adept boars integrate difficult piggies into their group and is actually very effective. It is much easier to give medication etc. when the hierarchy is clear and you can put your authority behind something you need to do with them.
Understanding Prey Animal Instincts, Guinea Pig Whispering And Cuddling Tips

Guinea pigs live in a strictly hierarchical society. In the absence of you asserting the dominance that you'd naturally have because of your size they will start to dominate you when they push the boundaries as teenagers. In that way they very resemble dogs.

However you have to be aware that that has nothing to do with guinea pigs not doing what you want them to. Usually a tap or a (gentle) push on the bottom end gets them going. Otherwise just lift them out. Guinea pigs also don't do 'No'. You have to physically remove anything that fascinates them if you don't want them to get at it. ;)

Oh my goodness that's great but I'm laughing at the thought of licking my piggies ears. Boss pig does do that to sweet pig, so it is a language they speak :-)
