Hello, I’m new here but I saw this forum is very informative and helpful so thought I’d ask a question or two. I have a female guinea pig (baby is her name) and her eye has seemed to get pretty swollen and red (it looks very agitated) there isn’t really any discharge at all, she still has an appetite and seems super happy but her eye is pretty swollen and she doesn’t seem to keep it open as much as she usually does. I’m thinking maybe it could be pink eye, but I don’t know. If anyone has any at home treatments or anything that would be very helpful. She also started having this problem yesterday. At first I thought it was hay poke since she does tend to go behind her hay rack and run wild, but I haven’t been able to find any hay in her eyeball. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

I inserted a picture of the swollen eye with and without flash, and also inserted a picture of her perfectly fine eye. Just so you guys could get an idea of how swollen the other is .

This is an eye injury which isn't uncommon in guinea pigs. You need to see a vet as a matter of urgency to treat this as the eye is very delicate and can deteriorate quickly. If you do not see a vet promptly you can be facing the cost of an operation to remove the eye if it reaches a stage where it is no longer salvageable through medication. Usually the vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drop

Just for tonight, until I get her to the vet, can I get her anything to make her comfortable or to clean it?

You need to see a vet as a matter of urgency. My vet always sees eye problems the same day.

Unfortunately where I live, my vet is always completely scheduled out. And I don’t trust much vets in my area.

Please see a vet as soon as you can get to one!
A bulging eye is often caused by an abscess behind the eyeball (retrobulbar abscess).

Explain its an emergency. vets have emergency appointments eyes are an emergency appointment.

Yes, please see a vet, this can become very serious, very quickly x Do hope Baby is alright
