Hello everyone, let me get straight to the issue, I recently noticed that my guinea pig Pumpkin's eye looks like it's out more than the other, he has crust around that eye, he normally only has very little crust but lately he's been getting more crust and that eye looks a bit more watery than the other. I am taking him to the vet tommorow. I was wondering if anyone might know what this is because it's his entire eye, it doesn't appear to be conjunctivitis. I should mention that he's not a year old yet, I don't know how many months but he is an adult and that he had pneumonia/uri a couple of months ago that was pretty hard to get rid of.

It could be a number of things from conjunctivitis, to an infection or a fungal issue. Well done for spotting it so quickly, the vet should be able to give you the correct medication for it.

Thank you for the response! Hopefully it's not too bad.

My first thought is it could be a retrobulbar abscess (abscess behind the eye). You need to get a guinea pig savvy vet to take a look asap.
I took him to the vet and she said she wasn't too worried about his eye she was more worried about his loss of appetite and energy. She checked his teeth and they looked fine so she sent us home with metacam (in case the issue are his teeth) and Ofloxacin for his eye. If he doesn't improve soon they're going to sedate him to check his teeth because when he eats he moves his mouth weird. Also, I noticed that the discharge that is coming out of his eye is white, he does eat a bit, mostly veggies and treats but I have to syringe water because he won't drink on his own. If it is a retrobulbar abscess, what are other symptoms?

That is what his eye/discharge looks like. It's not always that much but there is always some there.20170418_193338.webp

This is all pointing to retrobulbar abscess. Moving mouth in a funny way would suggest pain when eating, which is what happens when there is an abscess involved. Can you get a second opinion?
The vet told us to return if there is no improvement, but his eye no longer produces any discharge, he is eating on his own, he doesn't move his mouth weird anymore, and he is behaving like he normally does. Would you recommend taking him to the vet once again or wait? Also, how do they check for an abscess?

I'm sorry your boy is poorly.I would maybe get a second opinion,is your vet a guinea pig savvy vet/exotic ?maybe weight your guinea pig daily to see if any weight loss .if weight loss is occuring, this would suggest he/she is not eating enough. It can be deseptive just looking at what they eat for a short time, weight loss is a good indicator they have insufficient food intake.good luck sorting this situation out.x

I have nothing to add healthwise just wanted to point out the "milky" discharge from his eye is normal cleaning fluid. All piggies produce this but you do rarely see it as its usually used up with cleaning themselves
