I have four guinea pigs and they have been all nice and friendly to each other for months. They never displayed any types of aggression!

But just yesterday and today, I found two gashes in one of my guinea pigs (see pic)

I am trying to find out the cause of her gash, either she stabbed her with something (which is unlikely because there no indications of blood in her home) or one of her playmates is showing violence.

Please post what you guys think could have caused this horrible boo boo on my piggie!

P.S. They are all females.

Maybe somebody with a female heard can shed some light on this better than I can but two of my girls have this awful love-hate thing. One of them is a bully and the other runs around screaming in submission although the bully will come up with scabs that look like that (only not open) so I not sure who is really worse off. My vet told me to keep an eye on them to monitor for infection as she gets one every so often. I can't split them up because they just cry. Her scabs are small and round like that but I have never come across an open one so can't say for sure.

Sows tend to get a bit aggressive when they are in season, you should hear mine and also when they have ovarian cysts (not saying yours has them).

Is it definitely something one of the others have done? The reason I'm asking is because I'm sure @artcasper girls had a fungal infection and it looked a bit like that, I've tagged her anyway so she can look and see if it looks similar, I'll also tag @helen105281 in to have a look.

For now I would try and keep an eye on them to see if there's any aggression.

my piggies have never fighted for long ive had them bbbbbbbbbuuuuttttttttttt they ive seen my older piggies face with the younge piggie and i had to seporate them tammy (old one) look like she was gonna bite the other piggie so yeah x but just keep a eye on yours incase something will happen and if do you can help out stright away x and also just keep a eye on your piggies gashes x
xhugs to you and your piggiesx

What does the other gash look like and where is it in relation to this one? Do the 2 marry up as an entry and exit bite wound?

Please don't overlook the possibility that the wound is most likely self-inflicted as the start of mange mites or fungal. Please have her checked by a vet.

hmmm hard to see from the photo.. but, my one day i came home and saw what i thought was one wound on Pippin... i immediately thought they had been fighting... on closer inspection, i found 3 other ' wound ' sites... i couldn't understand how Gladys had inflicted so many .... we went to the vets and had some tests which turned out to be ringworm... the sores looked horrible at the time :(
but after some imaverol baths it was all cleared up and her fur grew back..
best to get it checked at the vets xx

Thanks for the help guys :yahoo:k
I don't think the wounds are directly correlated with each other as an entry and exit wound.
The wounds themselves are on opposite sides of her body,
On first glance, they did not look they were linked to a site of any fungal and mite problems.
(I've had one other piggie who had fungal problems and she was treated for and recovered, so I am familiar with the symptoms of fungal)
But I will take the self-infliction bite into consideration and get her checked out if I see one more wound.
I am currently monitoring them closely and have done a double check on her home just to make sure I can rule out aggressive behavior and environment damage before taking her to the vet. Its been a whole day with no sign of another wound.

How often do piggies self-inflict harm?
