Guinea pig's head is slightly lopsided, lump under chin

Obviously I’m not a vet and this is just my experience but I really think the Zithromax should be given a go. You’ve tried Baytril so you’ve got nothing to lose. My Pepper had a two week course of Baytril and it didn’t do anything and the abscess got so much larger. Pepper had a long course of Zithromax. 6 weeks but it did suppress his appetite while he was on it and he needed syringe feeding.

I would really like to if we're able to convince them!

We noticed that Baytril worked for the ear infection, but with the recurrence of abscesses I'm not sure it's as effective in them. Do you happen to know if Zithromax targets/kills/removes any pus that might be left over?

Peppers abscess was by his windpipe too. At the front slightly to the right. He had it marsupialised and I managed to keep it open and flushed for 10days.

Here’s his thread if you like to have a read. It’s quite long but there is lots of great advice in there from everyone on here.

Dental? Pepper is off to the vets tomorrow

I'm unfortunately in Glasgow; we've been visiting Animal A&E in Kilsyth who are usually pretty good - I'll try to push on the Zithromax front. I think with regard to pus being left, it's quite close to her windpipe so they didn't want to be too invasive - is there anything that can be done to work around the awkward location?
Hi @KikiKaka my guinea pig had a large abscess on her jaw which was fully treated and fixed by Apex Vets in Denny (near Falkirk) if you are looking to try an alternative vets. Highly recommend

They were actually the vet who referred me to Animal A&E in the first place as they weren't able to take on new patients at the time, unfortunately!

That is unfortunate as they have a lot of surgical experience with piggies (thanks to my lot too!). I hope your piggy’s health improves soon.

She's been in again today to have it drained, but upon cleaning it tonight I can still feel a lump in the area - is this normal if the pocket has been left behind or is it indicative that there would still be pus in there?

I've just had this response via email, so will keep an eye on it and report back"

"There is still the potential for a small amount of pus to be left behind, or more likely, the body creating more pus (due to an infectious cause) which would cause it to swell up, as well as local inflammation of the surrounding tissues due to iatrogenic needle penetration.
Let’s see how things progress with medication before we do a more radical exploration. She’s otherwise bright and well in herself.
It should hopefully regress soon."

Aaaaand it's flared back up again. Soonest the vet can have her in for a surgical removal is Tuesday - is that an issue if she's going to be taking antibiotics/painkillers in the meantime or is it okay to leave it that long?

I’m sorry. That should be fine to wait until Tuesday as long as she’s eating and is ok in herself. Good luck. 🤞🏻

Turns out we can't get her there until Wednesday because we're reliant on a lift... will absolutely be keeping an eye out in the meantime in case she seems to be in any discomfort!
