Anyone know if Quaker Parrots are dangerous towards guinea pigs in same house. I was going to get a parrot but in another room but could happen to fly in there when out?

Hi and welcome to the forum. I was the one who responded on Facebook. I think my concern (as a non bird owner) would be piggies coming into contact with bird poop causing health problems or them being spooked by a bird flying above. What kind of cage do you have the piggies in? Is there a way to put a cover on the top to stop any poops from getting in?

I know wild bird poop can spread disease but I'm not sure on domesticated birds

I have in the past kept parakeets and budgies who have been free flying but not in my piggy room. I have a dim and distant recollection of something to do with droppings but I’ll be honest I can’t now remember the advice I was given. I suspect it was just to keep the piggies away from the droppings.

This bird would be in totally different room. Just was talking about noise or when I let them out for a few hours taking a flight into other room before I caught up to them.

Piggies do startle very easily and part of their natural prey instinct is to fear being caught by a bird so I would imaging a large parrot flying into their room would really spook them. Could you keep them entirely separate?

Yeah I thought they might be too, although Quakers are pretty small, about 5 ounces full grown.

I had never heard of them so just had to Google it. They are very sweet looking birds and much smaller than I imagined!

I kept rosellas. I suspect they are about the same size. Destructive little devils!

I think aviary type birds like parrots can carry Psittacosis in theirpoo which can be caught by humans, not sure about piggies pigs or other pets

I think I read online somewhere that droppings from some pet birds can transmit psittacosis, or a form of it, to guineas etc that come into contact with it. So I'd agree with covering the pigs' cage if/when the parrot might fly over - better safe than sorry!

Yes this one is full grown and is probably like 10 inches with tail feathers.

Psittacosis is also transmittable to guinea pigs; hence why guinea pigs and birds should not share the same space.

I have taken my piggies to the vet a couple of time when there have also been parrots, cockatiels and other birds in the waiting room, and I have to say the bird noises have really distressed my girls. More than the barking dogs. I was surprised as they are outdoor piggies and hear wild birds in the garden every day, but they were definitely scared of pet birds. This might be just my strange girls and maybe if it was every day noise they would just get used to it, but I thought it was worth mentioning as I never would have expected it.
