my wee gpig has develped a growth type thing on his rear end.where if he had a tail(hope that makes sense)no causing him any harm.its not a hard lump.its her to descibe.somebody said it could be a blockedscent gland.anybody any ideas

is there any mark/scratch in it? could be an abcess. any lumps i would always get checked by the vet as an abcess could turn nasty quite quickly. or it coulod be a harmless fatty lump but i would definately get it checked out x

Here's a link for more information on lumps.

None of my guinea pigs have had lumps.... so far. I've also never heard of a blocked scent gland though.

Anyway, I hope that link will help. If you guinea pig looks like he might be in pain, or not acting like he normally would. I'd take him to see your vet, just to be safe.

I hope he's okay though!

Is the lump kinda greasy, almost like a hard bit of ear wax but dark brown? If so it is most likely the output from the gland and can be gently washed off :)

If it is under the skin then best to have it checked out. X

My Eliza has a hard pea sized lump near her left foot to the side of her belly. My vet examined it and said it was nothing to worry about and they would investigate further only if it changed and / or grew. 1.5 years later, it is still there. It hasn't changed and doesn't bother her.

I would suggest that any unknown lump or bump should be checked by a vet just to be on the safe side :)

Welcome to the forum, Monica. :)

Have you cleaned the grease gland lately, taken off all that waxy buildup? It's possible that it's become infected if not, so do give it a gentle clean (washing up liquid applied neat to the area, lathered up with just a splash of water) so you can see the area, and check with the vet regarding the lump.

thanks for all your advice.midnightangel.its very simular to what you have descibed.going to try your advice

Hi Monica, how did you get on, was it just a grease lump? If not or under the skin best get the vet to check it asap. :)
