I've just been given a guinea pig (Sooty) by a family who said they couldn't afford to feed him - so ofcourse already owning four I took him in!

I was looking around his mouth and have noticed a load of scabs covering his mouth and nose, I've had him two weeks and it doesn't seem to be healing. Today I noticed he licks and sucks his food more than he chews, so i checked his teeth and noticed where his bottom ones are theres just a hole and what looks like the tiny stump of a rotted tooth. So I'm guessing my guinea pig was pretty much abused from his previous owners, whether his teeth have rotted or been pulled out I don't know. My mam says It'd cost too much for him to see a vet as he doesn't seem to be in any pain, but I'm worried about him not being able to eat much and eventually dying. He seems a happy guinea pig since living with us so the problems not so bad I'm just wondering if anyone knows the cause of his mouth problems and whats best to be done about it..

Thanks x

He really does need to see a vet by the sound of it. It doesn't cost that much consultation at my vets is only £5.00 a session. If he isn't eating enough you need to mash some pellets with warm water and feed him with a syringe or a tea spoon or you could use critical care mixed with water.

I would try and push mum for a vets visit, we know ourselves when we have sore mouths it isn't pleasant, it must be awful for him. :(

It is possible that he has broken the teeth by biting the wire in his cage/hutch.
Are there any signs that the teeth are still growing?

If the teeth are growing they will grow back! Sunshine is forever doing this and they do grow back, he has no problem eating. It's very strange why his teeth keep breaking though!

There seems a very small stump where his bottom teeth are, so hopefully they'll grow back! I'm going to ring the vets in the morning, thanks very much for your replies :)

If he has got scabs on his mouth and nose he might have cheilitis, my guinea pig used to have it really bad and at the same time one of his top teeth kept breaking off but that stopped when we had the cheilitis under control. You can use Daktarin gel from the pharmacy to get rid of the scabs or an iodine cream. But best get him checked out :).

You have to remove the scabs and then apply the Daktarin Oral Gel to the area.
Most pigs object, to some extent, but you must ignore the protest!
It is a waste of time applying the Gel directly onto the scabs.
