Guinea-Pigs and Rabbits and why they cannot be housed together

Well, where do I start ?

The do not make ideal companions for each other as they are totally different animals !
It’s like housing us humans with gorillas

Rabbits are a lot bigger than guinea pigs in their size so this for one can be a danger to guinea pigs

They need different sized housing

Guinea pigs are a sociable rodent so are best off housed in pairs or trios
Rabbits on the other hand like to be with their own kind too

Rabbits have very strong back/hind legs so when they kick out not meaning to they may hit the guinea pig and injure them quite badly

Rabbits and guinea pigs do both eat grasses and hay but they also require different nutrients and guinea pigs need a lot more Vit C than rabbits require as they cannot produce their own so by housing these together then too little Vit C for guinea pigs can be fatal and too much Vit C for rabbits can also be fatal

Rabbits can give guinea pigs diseases as guinea pigs cannot cope very well with respiratory infections as their immune system isn’t used to these types of things

http://www.guineapigcages.com/rabbits.htm is also some great advice.

People in the UK might also be interested to know that it is the legal responsibility of an owner to meet their animal's LEGAL needs. One of these is...

"The need to live with, or apart from, other animals."

The RSPCA have chosen to interpret this as rabbits should not be housed with guinea pigs.

One point to add to your list ILA - rabbits can get "amourous" with the guineapig and hurt them in the process - before we realised our mistake we had Tiger in with our bun George until George got romantic ideas (must have been Tiger's long hair!) so we separated them.

I took the children to a farm last week, I was so sad to see the piggies housed with the rabbits.. One of the piggies seemed very very scared and wouldn't go near the rabbits he stayed in the corner cowering :'(
The rabbits were humping each other so I'm sure the poor pigs had some of that happening :'(
