I have had a female guinea pig for a few weeks now and decided to get her a friend, but when i brought the new one home, i discovered it was a male.it was too late to return to the pet shop, so i put the boar into the sow's cage and they started to fight instantly. i do not know if they are neutered, spayed. i am worried, mostly for the female, because the male always kick her out of the hideys and nips her even though he is younger and half her size.what do i do?

Hello and welcome to the forum

It is vital that you remove the Male immediately and keep him separately. An un neutered Male cannot live with a female without a significant risk of pregnancy which is dangerous for the sow.

Please return the Male to the store when it reopens. Ask them to cover any costs associated with the mis-sexing (eg vets costs)

If in future you decide to get another female Please do not introduce without reading our guides on introductions and bondings which must always be done on neutral territory. You cannot simply put another piggy into one piggy’s cage without there being a fight.

Please answer as soon as possible, they wont stop fighting:help:

You have had an answer above. It is unsafe to keep your piggies together in their current state. A very high number of guinea pig pregnancies result in stillbirths, death of young pups and/or death of the pregnant sow. This forum is rescue friendly and very much against intentional breeding and will not support those who chose to breed their piggies

ok thank you. what should i do if i get it neutered?

You must remove the Male immediately. If you intend to neuter him you must keep the Male separate from the female until he is 6 weeks post surgery as that is the only way to be sure that he is “safe” and can’t impregnate your female.

can a boar impregnate a sow older than him ?
he still is small enough to fit my hands and she is twice or triple his size

Yes.
Once he is 250g in weight and over 3 weeks of age he is sexually mature enough to impregnate her.
I have given you the clearest possible advice. You need to remove him from he cage immediately.

thank you. i will try to neuter or return him

Under the UK consumer legislation they will have to take him back and refund you. However, if he has impregnated your female you will want to have vets bills paid. You have a duty in law to mitigate your loss. That means that you must remove him and keep him separate to minimise the risk of pregnancy.

In the UK most vets will only neuter once the boar is several months old so you would need to keep him separate for a couple of months before a UK vet would neuter him. Then you have to wait 6 weeks after surgery. So it’s a long game.

Please add your country to your profile.
I have no information about your consumer legislation.
However my advice remains. Remove the male, keep him seperate and do not introduce again until,he is 6 weeks post neutering.

I would have thought she would be pregnant already ,so please don't put them back together.do you know how old your piggies are.

thank you for the advice . i'll try and see what i can do .
if i return the boar do i have to get a second sow or can she live on her own?
my sow has been living alone for about two months before i bought the the boar

i do not know, they did not give me their ages, but i put the boar inside today around noon. they fought for two hours and then went to seperate hidies and slept. i don't think they've mated yet, they were just fighting and squeeking and chattering their teeth really loudly

can you put you location in ( you go to your profile & go all the way down & put your location in.we have quite a lot of USA members, California, Texas, Kentucky, Indian Australia Switzerland. The reason for the location is if your piggy gets ill we can tell you where your best vet or rescue is.
So Welcome to our friendly forum.

Guinea pigs are best in kept with the same sex.
Can you put a really good photo of them then we judge a rough age. Also can you take a really good photo of there genitalia, get some one to help you it's go to be really clear. Just in case the pet shop has got it wrong, which they do quite often.

OP has already said they have identified that this is a boar that was sold as a sow.

the female is the orange and white one.
the male is black and orange.
the sow is harder to handle, which is why i didnt pick her up.
about four hours after putting the boar into the cage, i noticed that the sow kept trying to break into the boars hidey and flattened herself out. i got scared that they were trying to mate, so i separated them until i could return the boar.

Please keep them separate until you can return him to the store. With any luck the evil deed might not have occurred.

you mean they could have mated? right now they are squeeking and calling to each other really loud. they could have done it already:(:(:soz:

It happens in the blink of an eye, I’m afraid. All you can do is await events. Average pregnancy lasts 10weeks. So you have a bit of a long wait. If your sow is pregnant please open a new thread in our pregnancy section of the forum and we can offer help and advice and support there. https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/forums/pregnancy-baby-care-and-sexing-no-breeding.11/
