hi i got two guinea pigs from a friend who had to give them up

got them for my 10 year old, but i will be the primary care giver

on closer inspection when we got them home, one has hair loss and a small cut on the lower back

they are in good condition, and correct weight, bright and alert

i asked my friend, did she know why the hair loss?

says that the guinea pig is very nervous, and breaks out like this now and again?

and it has been improving, shes been spraying the area with a spray to treat it, its sherleys anti insecticidal spray for mite, lice and fleas

any ideas? advice?

no hair loss or cuts on other guinea pig at all

Sounds like mites to me, which can be induced/ exacerbated by stress. They will need treating with Ivomec. Gorgeous Guineas also have a range of natural treatments for skin conditions. x

It could be mites? But I'm not really an expert on these things.
Take her to the vet and they'll be able to sort it for you. I'm sure someone else is able to give you more of a clue.

Hi there and welcome.

There are a number of reasons for hair loss.

Can I ask how old the piggies are and what sex they are?

they are 2 yrs old and both female

former owner also thinks that lack of vit c in a diet can cause hair loss?

i will be upgrading their diet as well in next few days

they are currently on wags guinea crunch and timothy hay and green veggies

also wanted to know can mites be transferred to humans? son knows the rules of washing hands after contact, and is it ok to have guinea pigs in a bedroom? any health risks etc?

thanks for the info

I think that a vet trip is in order just to be safe and some baths for all of them in antifungal shampoo! try gorgeous guineas they have really good products and if you e-mail them they will give advice too! It sounds to me like mites as I have had george with them previously but only a vet can advise you properly.

Also the spray treatment doesn't really work that well you need a spot on treatment such as panomec/ ivomec from vets or I think you can get it on the internet but I always go to the vets to be safe!
